Truck Driver

General Statement

Under supervision, operates and maintains light or heavy trucks, some of which may be equipped with power appliances.

Essential Job Functions

• Operates a wide variety of motor-driven vehicles and hauls supplies, tools, materials, equipment and employees to and from designated locations.
• Operates power attachments and accessories on vehicles, including lift gate, power winch, snow plow, cutting deck, salt spreader or other equipment.
• Makes minor repairs and adjustments, inspects assigned vehicle, attachments and accessories, and loads for safe operation in the field, keeps equipment clean and supplied with required lubricants, and keeps a maintenance record.
• Connects trailers and other attachments, secures loads, and loads and unloads materials and equipment transported, as necessary to complete assignments.
• Acts as safety person on site at locations requiring a safety man, and communicates with laborers and heavy equipment operators as necessary to safely assist in loading activities and traffic control situations.
• Reviews and interprets rule books, equipment manuals and road maps.
• Takes prompt corrective action as needed in response to emergency situations, such as: malfunctioning equipment, vehicular accidents, or disrupted operational processes.
• Communicates on a regular basis with supervisors, laborers and other personnel to properly conduct, coordinate and carry out assignments.

Other Job Functions

• Obtains materials and supplies from retail suppliers as directed.
• Obtains and delivers mail, small parts, correspondence to and from the plant and field locations.
• Communicates with engineers, dispatcher, treatment plant operators, and other work groups via radio, to coordinate related activities and relay messages/instructions.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors and traffic. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout and outside the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the operating characteristics of light to medium trucks with power accessories.
• Considerable knowledge of the routine maintenance requirements of light automotive equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of driving laws and regulations.
• Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to automotive equipment in the field.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Absolute Requirements

Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License, with endorsements for vehicles with air brakes, combination vehicles, hazardous materials and tanker vehicles.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

One year of experience driving a truck as a prime duty.

Substitution

Successful completion of training in the operation of a truck at a recognized school may be substituted for the required experience on an hour-for-hour basis to a maximum of 320 hours (8 weeks).
