Summary
Responsible for new construction and construction maintenance activities at the County parks, other than contracted projects.
The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.
Works under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Park Maintenance and Park Foreman at location assigned to. Has contact with vendors and other department personnel.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Assists in the planning, designing, and budgeting for projects involving construction, repair, and remodeling of Parks Department buildings and equipment.
Performs construction and finishing activities involving, but not limited to :
May also be given assignments involving electrical and plumbing work.
Reports on progress and completion of each project.
Picks up and / or receives equipment and supplies.
Maintains inventory of equipment and materials.
Keeps carpentry shop and van in a clean and orderly manner.
Maintain parks, buildings and / or fairgrounds including, but not limited to, trimming trees and bushes, removing garbage, picking-up ground litter, and cleaning / sanitizing restrooms.

Education and / or Experience : High school diploma or general education degree (GED); plus at least three years' experience involving carpentry, the construction trades, and / or facility maintenance, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Language Skills : Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customer or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills : Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability : Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations : Must have an appropriate Texas Driver's License. Any employee who drives a vehicle on official business must have a driving record, which meets standards set by the County and the County's insurance carrier.
Other Skills And Abilities : Familiarity with a variety of hand tools and power tools used in carpentry and construction. Knowledge of park maintenance procedures and appropriate safety procedures relating to use of equipment ensuring public safety in facility maintenance. Ability to perform arduous duties under adverse conditions. Demonstrated proficiency in both oral and written communications. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other county employees and officials and the general public. Ability to maintain a good driving record and retain a Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities. Knowledge of first aid.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud because of the noise of the beach, heavy equipment and hand and power tools.
