Position Summary
The Professional Billing Compliance Coordinator for the Department of Medicine at CUIMC is responsible for the direct oversight of all billing compliance activities within the department. The coordinator supports and ensures the accuracy and integrity of all coding and documentation practices across multiple divisions. The Coordinator ensures the implementation and application of Columbia University compliance policies, guidelines, and regulations, as well as federal and state requirements.
The position reports jointly to the Department of Medicine and the Office for Billing Compliance (OFBC), and works closely with faculty, practice managers, revenue cycle directors, the Clinical Revenue Office (CRO), and the OFBC to identify and resolve documentation, coding, and billing issues. A key responsibility includes conducting regular audits of departmentally submitted services, following a rolling yearly schedule within the compliance audit system. The Coordinator also plays a central role in audit preparation, results review, training, and identifying quality and improvement opportunities across the department.
Responsibilities
- Implement Columbia University compliance guidelines, regulations, policies, and recommendations across all divisions within the Department of Medicine.
- Direct the application of The University's and The Department's compliance plans. Revise the departmental compliance plan annually and in partnership with the OFBC.
- In conjunction with the OFBC, develop department specific compliance educational programs focused on the department's documentation, coding, and billing processes across all specialties.
- Perform provider audits scheduled throughout the year for all providers.
- Prepare and disseminate compliance information to all departmental staff and faculty.
- Provide general oversight of all billing activities, as they relate to compliance within the department.
- Develop methodology, implement, and monitor research-related billing activities within the department.
- Assist with other assignments and related responsibilities as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, Finance, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
- Minimum of four (4) years of direct experience in healthcare billing, coding, and compliance, preferably in an academic medical center or large healthcare system.
- Current proficiency of CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS coding, and billing regulations.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, written, and oral communication skills, as well as excellent administrative and interpersonal skills.
- Highly proficient in dealing with conflict and challenging situations.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA).
- Epic system experience.
- Knowledge of Columbia University and CUIMC policies and procedures related to clinical billing and compliance.
Other Requirements
- Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements.
