Job purpose
The Heavy Civil Estimator supports the preconstruction and business development teams by reviewing project plans, specifications, and requirements across a range of heavy civil disciplines. This role leads or contributes to multidisciplinary estimates including structures, roadway, concrete paving, grading, and drainage for DOT, municipal, government, aviation, and railroad clients. The Estimator manages all aspects of assigned pursuits including quantity takeoffs, cost estimation, and subcontractor and supplier outreach. The position requires strong knowledge of heavy civil construction means and methods, costs, and engineering principles.
Duties and responsibilities
- Review and interpret all bid documents and identify risks and key project requirements.
- Prepare and submit RFIs to owners as needed.
- Lead or collaborate with estimating teams to develop comprehensive heavy civil estimates.
- Perform and review accurate quantity takeoffs and material pricing.
- Develop organized cost estimates for labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractor scopes.
- Prepare bid packages and conduct outreach to subcontractors and suppliers.
- Analyze subcontractor and supplier quotes to ensure complete and competitive scopes.
- Prepare and present estimates at various project stages including Conceptual, Schematic, Design Build, CMGC, and Bid Build.
- Identify value engineering opportunities.
- Work closely with operations teams including Structures, Paving, Equipment, QC, and Surveying to develop accurate and competitive bid strategies.
- Understand project logistics and scheduling requirements and assist in developing preliminary bid schedules.
- Prepare and submit final proposals to project owners.
- Support post bid activities including buyouts and budget development.
- Participate in preconstruction duties including pre bid meetings and site visits.
- Prepare for and actively participate in estimating meetings, including leading discussions on new pursuits, risks, and resource needs.
- Contribute to proposal content and technical writing assignments.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
BS in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent field experience preferred.Minimum 5 years of experience as an Estimator, Project Manager, or similar heavy civil role preferred.Experience in public and private heavy civil work including bridges, roadway, CIP concrete, grading, drainage, foundations and piling, and crane operations.Effective communication and presentation skills.Proficiency with MS Office, estimating software (HCSS preferred), Bluebeam, electronic solicitation platforms (PreconstructionSuite a plus), and scheduling software. AGTEK experience is a plus.Strong organization, time management, and the ability to meet hard deadlines independently.Design Build or CMGC experience is a plus.Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.Valid driver's license and ability to pass background checks for secure facilities including airports, railroads, and military bases.Working conditions
Primarily office based with periodic travel for jobsite visits, meetings, and conferences. Position is based in our St. Charles, Missouri office or Denver, Colorado.
