SUMMARY
The Commercial Analyst and Lender role combines credit analysis expertise with direct lending responsibilities to support business members in achieving their financial goals. This position is responsible for originating, underwriting, servicing, and processing commercial loans. The role involves evaluating creditworthiness, structuring loan terms, and maintaining compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements. The Commercial Analyst and Lender will actively develop and manage small commercial member relationships, ensuring exceptional service and sound credit decisions. This role will primarily perform credit analyst duties while managing loans at or below $150,000.
Requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Responsible for meeting all established service goals.
Responsible for supporting commercial loan officers with credit analysis or other duties as assigned.
Responsible for the review and independent, objective underwriting of business / commercial loans which includes collecting appropriate documentation and creating thorough and concise analyses of the risks and mitigation factors of current and prospective commercial loan relationships, including reviewing and analyzing the borrowers’ and guarantors’ financial statements and preparing debt service coverage analyses and assessments of collateral.
Compare liquidity, profitability and credit histories of establishments being evaluated with those of similar establishments in the same industries and geographic location.
Attend client calls with commercial loan officers, as necessary, to develop more information on the companies being analyzed and to better assess the risks associated with the credit.
Prepare, review and issue standard term sheet letters to members.
Manage credit renewals and maturities via portfolio monitoring. Interact with commercial loan officers to obtain appropriate information to complete a credit analysis.
Perform annual loan reviews of our existing portfolio to determine continued repayment capacity and potential risks. Create thorough and concise analyses of business and / or personal tax returns and financial statements for all member business loans that meet the required guidelines set within the MBL Commercial Lending Policy.
Accurately input financial and loan data into Valley’s financial analysis tools. Proficiently evaluate and extract data from the financial analysis of members.
Originate and structure commercial loan requests under $150,000 in accordance with policy and regulatory guidelines.
Develop and maintain relationships with small business and commercial members to identify lending opportunities.
Attend Member Business Loan (MBL) meeting to provide input and recommendations on the financial soundness and condition of business loan requests presented by commercial loan officers.
Recognize and proactively address risk, including but not limited to, those associated with Bank Secrecy Act, anti-money laundering, fair lending and privacy.
Consult with members to verify financial and credit transactions.
Assemble loan files, process loan documents, maintain tickler lists, and board loans to Valley’s core system.
Responsible for UCC and Title Lien filings and tracking.
Responsible for preparation of loan perfection documentation and tracking.
Keep abreast of current trends within the industry to maintaining peer relationships, attending seminars, workshops and reading industry periodicals.
Understand and comply with all lending policies and procedures for commercial and construction loans.
Perform any additional duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of lending, credit and accounting concepts.
Thorough knowledge of credit union loan products and applicable policies and standards.
Ability to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team.
Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email software and use of the Internet. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs including Word and Excel.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate interest, commissions, discounts, proportions, and percentages and to compute rate, ratio and percent. Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
Ability to demonstrate high levels of accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to deal calmly and professionally with diverse personalities and cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization.
Excellent problem solving and analytical skills required. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Ability to communicate with others inside and / or outside the organization, both verbally and in writing, generally regarding routine matters for the purpose of giving and obtaining information, as well as advising or referring.

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or Economics, or related field from a four-year college or university; minimum of one-year related commercial lending or credit analysis experience and / or training preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
