Responsibilities

As a board-certified General Surgeon, incumbent provides the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients with surgical conditions requiring the services of a General Surgeon. Participates in training of surgical residents and contributes to clinical and basic research.

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. Examines, establishes diagnoses, and performs surgery where appropriate for patients with surgical conditions. Assesses and plans therapy for patients in the clinic setting. Provides preoperative diagnostic evaluation, care, and coordination of scheduling for patients requiring operative intervention. Performs major surgical operations to include but not limited to (a) Endoscopy - Therapeutic bronchoscopy of secretions, choledochectomy, diagnostic sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy (including biopsy), diagnostic esophagogastroscopy ( including biopsy), laparoscopy, operative and diagnostic; (b) Head and Neck - Biopsy, partial or complete resection of lesions of the thyroid, parathyroid, salivary glands, face, scalp, external ear, soft tissues of the face and neck, and lymph node dissection; (c) Chest - Open and closed cardiac massage, pleural abrasion, closed tube thoracostomy, excision, partial or total mastectomies, radical node dissection of neck, axilla, or groin; (d) Abdomen - Repair of hernias, operations on the gastrointestinal tract, biliary tract, pancreas, spleen, liver, adrenals, rectum and anus, kidney, urethra, bladder, uterus, tubes and ovaries and external genitalia; (e) Extremities - Operations on nerves, ganglia, muscles, tendons and management of simple fractures; (f) Intensive Care Management - Placement and interpretation of arterial, central venous and pulmonary artery lines and management of fluid and electrolyte problems including hyperalimentation; (g) Diagnostic procedures - Introduction of radiological contrast materials in conjunction with operative procedures or assessment of trauma; and (h) Use of mechanical, electrocautery for the excision, coagulation, vaporation and/or repair of tissue. Utilizes advance laparoscopic techniques.

2. Provides initial assessment, counseling, and evaluation for surgical options for patients with morbid obesity (obesity which poses a present or threatened impact on the patient's overall medical health. Usually defined as weight more than 100 pounds over ideal body weight, although in some circumstances less severe obesity may still qualify as "morbid obesity". Identifies patients who may achieve medical benefit from surgical intervention. Provides follow-up for patients who have undergone surgical weight control, at the MTF or elsewhere, and provides assessment and counseling for patients who develop a problem related to a prior bariatric procedure. Assures high quality follow-up for post-surgical bariatric patients. Performs surgery for patients with morbid obesity, both as primary procedures for patients with no prior history of weight-control surgery, and as revisional surgery for patients with complications (whether acute or chronic) of prior weight-control surgery. These weight-control procedures include, but are not limited to (a) gastric restrictive surgery, such as vertical gastroplasty; (b) gastric bypass surgery, such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, whether re-sectional or non-re-sectional; (c) total or near-total gastrectomy for those situations where the effects of prior bariatric surgery make restoration of a normal gastric reservoir impractical; (d) reversal of jejunoileal bypass surgery, with or without conversion to gastric bypass or vertical gastroplasty; (e) reversal of vertical gastroplasty or non-re-sectional gastric bypass; (f) incidental cholecystectomy and incidental appendectomy related to bariatric procedures.

3. Identifies patients who may achieve medical benefit from surgical intervention. Schedules surgery and clinic follow-up utilizing automated systems. Provides follow-up for patients who have undergone surgery at the MTF and provides assessment and counseling for patients who develop a problem related to a surgery. Assures high quality follow-up for post-surgical patients.

4. Provides night and weekend staff coverage for the General Surgery Service, in rotation with other staff surgeons. Provides the usual gamut of staff duties in connection with call, to include actual performance of surgery and direct/indirect supervision of house staff performed night/weekend surgery, as well as hospital rounds in connection with these patients. Fills in as needed to provide staff surgical coverage in elective or emergency General Surgery cases performed in normal duty hours when required by non-availability of other surgical staff, or to maintain operative skills in common surgical procedures in General Surgery (such as hernias, laparoscopic chole-cystectomy, colon resection, thyroid surgery).

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Physician (Family Medicine):

Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must have provided education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts or proof of foreign equivalency with your application package.)

Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Residency Training: Applicants must have successfully completed the required accredited residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled (General Surgery) and and at least 1 year of experience post licensing and residency completion. Experience may not be substituted for residency training that is required for the specialty identified.

The salary determination process begins after the initial job offer is accepted. This consists of the Activity Compensation Panel adding base pay and market pay to determine your starting salary and this will be provided to you once approved. Salary for physician positions is based on a tier scale, determined by the position specialty, grade, and location.
