Substitute Teacher

New Heights Charter School is Massachusetts only public school that involves all grades (6-12) in the Early College approach. Nearly all our 11th and 12th graders are full-time students on a college campus with younger students earning college credits at the school. You will join a committed creative team of educators who provide academic and social-emotional support to young people coming from high-need backgrounds ensuring they are college and career ready. • Assist students with their virtual learning in an in person setting;
• Provide substitute teaching coverage for teachers in the school as we transition to a hybrid setting;
• Maintain a current knowledge of all Covid and school policies/procedures and follow them accordingly;
• Role constantly changing to fit the needs at the time/stage of reopening which could include duties such as bathroom or hallway monitoring;
• Supervising students during transitions breakfast lunch and afterschool;
• Provides overall support to the student based on the needs of the classroom and the students Individual Education Program (IEP) and 504 Plans if applicable;
• Support students by providing one-on-one and small group intervention and support;
• Maintain discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff in accordance with school policies;
• Recognizes when teaching/learning and behavioral strategies are not successful and seeks the guidance of the classroom teacher(s) and specialist(s) to adapt assistance accordingly;
• Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
• Communicating effectively with students families and colleagues;
• Participating in collaborative curriculum development grade-level activities and school-wide functions events and trips;
• Maintain and respect confidentiality of student and school personnel information especially as it relates to Covid;
• Perform other related duties as assigned; Qualifications
  • Flexible and enjoys dealing with unpredictability;
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality;
  • Prior experience working in schools and/or urban communities is preferred but not required;
  • The ability to create and maintain a climate of respect and fairness for all students;
  • Hard-working energetic and are willing to learn and adapt;
  • The ability to maintain effective classroom management strategies;
  • Experience teaching or working with middle and secondary school age children preferred;
  • Strong organizational skills communication skills (particularly with children) and problem-solving skills;
  • Evidence of self-motivation willingness to be a team player and has a strong sense of personal responsibility;
  • Relentless commitment to the mission of educating urban students. Belief in and alignment with New Heights core beliefs and educational philosophy is non-negotiable;
