Position Summary

This Advising Dean will join the Preprofessional Advising and Academic Resources in Support of Excellence (ARISE) teams..

The Preprofessional Advising unit within the Center for Student Advising is responsible for advising and supporting undergraduate students and alumni of Columbia College and Columbia Engineering in their preparation for professional schools of health and law. ARISE is a team within the CSA which facilitates peer tutoring and coaching and other academic support initiatives. This Advising Dean will have a split role, serving as a preprofessional advisor advising undergraduates and alumni with an interest in applying to professional school and serving on the team supporting our academic support initiatives. On the preprofessional side, duties will include individual advising and participating in development and implementation of programming initiatives, as well as data collection and analysis.

The Advising Dean will also join the Academic Support team, assisting the Associate Director in developing and supporting academic support initiatives, including the Getting Things Done groups, the Peer Academic Skills Consultant program, tutoring, and academic skills workshops and programs. The Advising Dean will also focus on promoting our academic support services to the larger Columbia community and developing tools and facilitating professional development opportunities for all CSA advisors related to supporting students who may be experiencing academic difficulty/stress.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a member of the Preprofessional Advising team, whose duties include advising students and alumni on all phases of their preparation for professional school including support in preparing their applications.

• Assist in planning and facilitating special programs for preprofessional students/alumni including personal statement, application and interviewing workshops as well as guest lectures and alumni events and visits from professional schools.

• Manage communication including maintaining web page content.

• In collaboration with other members of the Preprofessional Advising team utilize AI to develop new tools to enhance advising, improve data collection and reporting.

• Represent Preprofessional Advising/Academic Support at campus-wide initiatives including NSOP, Days on Campus, Family Weekend, etc.

• Act as a resource to campus constituencies including Admissions, Alumni Affairs, Career Education, Global Programs and other campus offices regarding issues related to Preprofessional Advising /Academic Support.

• Partner with Associate Director of Tutoring and Academic Support in the training and supervision of Tutors and Peer Academic Skills Consultants; this may include observing tutoring/consulting sessions and providing feedback to student employees about their performance.

• Work alongside other members of the Academic Support team, work on the development and administration of assessment tools to evaluate tutoring/academic skill building consulting program as well as other initiatives.

• In collaboration with other members of the Academic Support team develop and implement various programming initiatives for Academic Support, including in-service trainings for CSA Advising Deans. Duties may include developing content, recruiting speakers, managing logistics, marketing, performing assessments and evaluations, and maintaining program archives

• Co-teach a weekly time management support group with another member of the Center for Student Advising.

• Bachelors degree and/or its equivalent required.

• A minimum of three years of experience required.

• Candidate must be an effective communicator with well-developed interpersonal, writing and presentation skills.

• The candidate must be able to work independently as well as a part of team.

• The candidate must have strong organizational skills, as well as be reliable, responsible and flexible.

• Candidate must have the ability to coordinate and implement diverse activities and programs, resolve conflicts, and build consensus with a variety of constituents.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree is preferred.

• Three to five years' experience working in one or more of the following areas is preferred: academic advising; high school or college teaching; career counseling; academic support programs; or a job requiring intensive writing.

• Demonstrated knowledge of health professions graduate programs and/or learning assistance is preferred.
