This position is located within the Environmental Management Services (EMS) of the Department of Veteran Affairs VA Medical Central for the Central Texas VA Health Care System. The primary purpose of this position is to exercise technical and administrative supervision over subordinate workers in supporting and performing tasks associated with the EMS goals and objectives.
Responsibilities include assigning staff for routine and non-routine duties on a daily and project-by-project basis. Non-routine duties require reorganization of work schedules efficiently to ensure work is accomplished in a timely manner. The position coordinates work with supervisors of other services within the positions area of jurisdiction to avoid interrupting patient care or other activities.
The position is responsible for the cleaning of all patient areas, corridor spaces throughout the Medical Center, Operating Rooms, and all other areas as assigned. It ensures the efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments of subordinates within established policies and schedules set by higher levels of supervision. The position plans daily and weekly assignments and equipment to meet established priorities. It trains staff and ensures they are using the patient-centered care principles in terms of customer service to patients, patients family members, and personnel.
The position provides on-the-job training for subordinates as individual needs dictate. It provides proper on-the-job training to ensure the housekeeping duties are effectively accomplished due to the constant change in the type of patients. The position provides special direction to new employees to prepare them for individual assignments, procedures, and safety policies. It keeps the supervisor informed about the condition of staff, unusual occurrences, or matters that should be brought to the attention of the supervisor. It keeps subordinates informed of proper methods, procedures, and uses of equipment and supplies; controls the use of supplies and equipment to affect cost control within the unit. The position may be assigned to conduct in-use testing of equipment and provide feedback regarding their observations. It ensures all safety regulations and procedures are observed and may on occasion be required to conduct training classes on specific safety issues.
The position may supervise the daily distribution of uniforms and textiles to designated areas and persons and ensures record keeping is timely and accurate. It approves leave requests for subordinates, counsels employees, and recommends disciplinary action to a higher-level supervisor whenever non-compliance with policy warrants. The position makes formal appraisal of subordinates work performance and conduct. It routinely inspects assigned areas to ensure the timely accomplishment of employee assignments, sanitation levels are maintained, equipment is properly cared for, and that associated housekeeping objectives are accomplished in an expedient and timely manner. The position performs within established guidelines, operating procedures, and department and Medical Center policy. It works independently following up on all work assignments to ensure that established procedures, work assignments, and safety standards are being properly applied and adjusting as necessary. The position ensures time and attendance records are accurate and complete prior to submission to the timekeeper. It keeps the immediate supervisor apprised of actual or potential problems and recommends remedial corrective actions. Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM, Sunday - Saturday, includes holidays

Physical Requirements: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust, and debris.
