Duties
and Responsibilities :
- Inspect and accurately maintain current documentation related to the status of fire safety equipment, fire safety systems, emergency showers, and eyewash stations.
- Inspect and report building safety hazards and recommend appropriate corrective action.
- Routinely audit campus facilities and work processes assuring compliance with all pertinent environmental health and safety policies, rules, and regulations.
- Inspect and document laboratory fume hood testing (annually).
- Investigate and report safety hazards / chemical spills and recommend appropriate corrective action.
- Develop and conduct training related to a new employee general safety and injury / illness prevention programs.
- Investigate workplace accidents and provide recommendations for corrective action.
- Maintain, update, and document safety programs including, but not limited to, confined space entry, lock out / tag out, forklift operation, fall protection, working at heights, etc.
- Maintain all requisite records and reports as directed by the Director of Environmental Health and Safety.
- Maintain pressure vessel inventory and permits.
- Perform ergonomic evaluations for office and field personnel, including written recommendations that can lessen the likelihood and reduce the incidence of injury.
- Participate in campus disaster / emergency preparedness.
- Maintain current and accurate library (physical and electronic) of Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information and inventory of all chemicals used or stored on campus.
- Audit disposal of Hazardous Materials
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Environmental Health and Safety and / or the Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management

Minimum Qualifications :
A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific or public health field is strongly preferred, along with minimum two years professional experience in a comprehensive environmental health and safety program, or an equivalent combination of education and experienceCommensurate and extensive credentials, training, and experience in a comprehensive environmental health and safety program may be substituted in lieu of the Bachelor's degree requirementGeneral knowledge of fire and life safety codes and requirementsGeneral knowledge of building codes and occupancy requirementsGeneral knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal environmental health and safety regulations and policiesGeneral knowledge of environmental health and safety principles and practicesHigh interpersonal skill to communicate effectively in writing, in-person, and over the telephone to a diverse audience including students, faculty, and staffKnowledge of and experience in ergonomic principles and best practicesAbility to exercise good judgment in effective time-management skills in the prioritization and proper execution of work when there are multiple tasks and competing prioritiesPreferred Qualifications :
Laboratory experience, specifically in a university setting, preferredSafety Management Specialist (SMS) Certification preferredAssociate Safety Professional (ASP) Certification preferredBilingual in English and Spanish preferredPerformance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
