ESS Program Aides work August through June months only.

Under the direction of the Extended Student Services (ESS) Site Lead, the ESS Program Aide participates in a variety of duties in the operation of the Extended Student Services Program at an assigned school site; observes and modifies behavior of students enrolled in the before and after school program during educational and recreational activities; coordinates and implements academic activities aligned with District curricula and educational standards; assists in maintaining a clean and safe learning environment for students.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE :

The ideal candidate has some childcare experience, either through a paid position or volunteer experiences. The candidate has the knowledge, interest, and ability to create a safe and engaging environment that provides children with age-appropriate and meaningful learning. The ideal candidate exhibits integrity, professionalism, caring, and competency as a positive role model. He or she has a commitment to building positive relationships with a culturally, linguistically, and socio-economically diverse community of students, staff, and parents.

An examination will be given to establish an eligibility list for the position of Extended School Services Program Aide in order to fill vacancies for the current school year. These positions are part-time and vary between 16.25 - 26.25 hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications :

Experience : Fifty (50) hours of experience working with children

Education : High School education (High School Diploma preferred)

  • Possess an Associate's Degree or higher (submit copy of degree with application).
  • OR

  • Completed 48 units of college work (submit transcripts with application).
  • OR

  • Successful completion of the Every Student Succeeds Act (formerly known as NCLB) Exam given by La Mesa - Spring Valley School District (submit copy of certificate with application).
  • AND

    Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.

    ESSA COMPLIANCE- The Extended School Services Program Aide classification requires that all incumbents meet the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirements. This can be accomplished by one of the following : a) 2 years of completed study at an institution of higher learning (48 units or more with transcripts submitted with application), b) an Associate's Degree or higher (copy of degree submitted with application), OR c) by passing the District ESSA exam.

    It is recommended that you apply for the position before completing the ESSA. You will receive an email with instructions on how to take the ESSA once you application has been reviewed.

    The written exam is for those who have submitted a classified application, meet minimum qualifications, and have satisfied the ESSA requirements above. Qualified candidates will be invited via email to the exam.

    All testing will take place at La Mesa - Spring Valley School District's Education Service Center, 4750 Date Avenue, La Mesa, CA 91942 (Phone : 619-668-5700) unless notified otherwise. Test starts promptly at the scheduled time. Latecomers will not be admitted. Candidates will be required to present valid photo identification prior to sign-in.

    Examples of Duties

    Essential Functions

  • Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g., read stories, listen to students read, provide writing assistance, reinforce English lessons, provide spelling practice, reinforce math lessons, and assist with curriculum-based homework assignments) for the purpose of practicing and / or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards.
  • Assists the ESS Site Lead in responding to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g., parents / guardians, students, district personnel) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and / or direction to other sources.
  • Assists with the implementation of instructional programs, lesson plans, and enrichment activities for the purpose of presenting and / or reinforcing learning concepts.
  • Assists with the planning of learning and / or age appropriate activities (e.g., games, art, music, science, language, drama, playground, songs, safety awareness) for the purpose of presenting and / or reinforcing learning concepts.
  • Attends department and / or in-service meetings for the purpose of conveying and / or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Coordinates and / or oversees individual and / or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g., snack time, group or individual games, playground activities, field trips, homework time) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning and recreational environment.
  • Develops and implements craft activities.
  • Promotes appropriate student behavior and good habits through implementation of a discipline plan for the purpose of improving the quality of students outcome and encouraging student development.
  • Transfers children directly from / to parents or designee for the purpose of ensuring safety of students and meeting the District and program requirements.
  • Other Functions :

  • Distributes crafts and / or play materials for the purpose of providing required supplies.
  • Serves nutritious snacks for the purpose of ensuring students receive proper nutritional items to meet federal and state guidelines.
  • Maintains program equipment and work areas (e.g., toys, games, instructional tools) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and / or providing a safe learning and recreational environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Experience : Fifty (50) hours of experience working with children

    Education : High School education (High School Diploma preferred)

    Equivalency : Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and fifty (50) hours of experience working with children in an organized setting. Completion of two years of higher education study OR possession of an Associate's or higher level degree, OR pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics OR reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.

    Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.
