General Purpose This is a seasonal position responsible for organizing and teaching of recreation activities for children and teenagers. This work is performed under the supervision of the Camp Supervisors.
Essential Job Functions- Supervises and organizes games and activities for campers in their assigned group during camp hours.
- Applies basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development and respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
- Responsible for supervising campers at all times.
- Escorts campers using different forms of transportation (i.e., walking, bus).
- Is aware of and implements safety guidelines.
- Takes responsibility for the quality of the supplies, equipment and materials.
- Maintains high standard of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
- High level of professionalism when interacting with parents and guardians.
- Supervises the orderly arrival and departure of campers.
- Represents camp positively when interacting with the public.
- Required to attend all camp functions including orientation, trainings, open house, and duration of assigned schedule.
- Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
QualificationsMINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE - Must be at least 17 years' of age
- Current CPR and First Aid certification or able to obtain and provide evidence of prior to the first day of orientation
- One (1) year of child care experience, or experience as a Summer Camp Counselor for at least one (1) full Summer.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - Ability to pass a Level 2 Background Check
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical
- Ability to commit to the entire 7 week camp program
- Ability to attend all mandatory camp training dates and camp open house 1 week prior to the start of camp
- Ability to work up to 40 hours a week
- Ability to communicate well with participants, parents, other staff and the general public
- Ability to exercise initiative, interpret and apply laws, ordinance, rules, regulations, and safety and health standards
- Ability to change planned activities in a moment's notice
- Ability to work independently without direct supervision
- Ability to set a good example for campers to encourage sharing, clean up, and good sportsmanship
- Ability to keep records and prepare reports
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to be patient and calm in a high stress environment
- Ability to teach and coach campers in planned activities indoors and outdoors
- Ability to exercise good judgement, self-control, and demonstrate enthusiasm
- Knowledge of safety rules and regulations
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements- Work environment is typically performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity and responsiveness to changes that include goals, priorities, and needs of the organization and position.
- The work is light and requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
- Work may be performed indoors and outdoors in hot, humid, or rainy weather.
- Must be able to constantly stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, speaking, standing, talking, walking, and running.
SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION: This position is deemed a safety sensitive position in accordance with Florida State Statute Chapter 112.0455 Drug Free Workplace Act and is subject to pre-employment drug screening. No city paid benefits with the exception of those required by law.
