Optical Engineer

Who we are :

Optical engineers at Cisco design and build the next generation of Cisco optical communication products. Your product development role may cover : Design and development of Optical transmission systems, subsystems, and components (including process development, photonic chip layout, simulation, verification). Selection and qualification of active and passive integrated photonic and discrete optical components for the final product.

Development of benchmarks, analysis, implementation, validation, and optimization of communications algorithms for link optimization. Resolution of technical issues associated with components, parts, products, or systems. Support testing of new and existing designs including product release. Deployment of optical systems in the field.

Advanced experienced professional using best practices and knowledge of internal or external business issues to improve products or services.

Works independently, but receives minimal guidance and direction from leader then determines best approach to accomplish work.

Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.

Leads projects from end-to-end, while also executing work as a primary contributor.

Leads design of systems, subsystems, or components.

Leads design reviews for optical systems and products.

Identifies and recommends innovative approaches to design strategy, using a broad knowledge of the industry and end-user experience from the field.

Designs, tests, and validates multiple subsystems / blocks.

Leads efforts for performance optimization and design testing.

Leads collaboration with hardware and software teams to design optical modules.

Identifies opportunities for multiple products to work together to create value for customers.

Minimum Qualifications :

Bachelors with 7 years of related experience, or Masters with 4 years of related experience, or PhD with 1 year of related experience.

Prior experience with bring-up and optimization of each new coherent transceiver design, including optimization of operating conditions of optical and electrical components.

Prior experience with design verification testing (DVT) of coherent transceivers to ensure optical specifications are met over operating conditions (temperature, power levels, etc.)

Preferred qualifications :

Prior experience with development of calibration and test procedures to ensure a consistent high transceiver performance over a wide range of operating conditions (temperature, production variation, ageing, power levels, etc.)

Prior experience with debug of transceivers, both during bring-up and volume manufacturing

The starting salary range posted for this position is $152,400.00 to $221,800.00 and reflects the projected salary range for new hires in this position in U.S. and / or Canada locations, not including incentive compensation

Individual pay is determined by the candidate's hiring location, market conditions, job-related skillset, experience, qualifications, education, certifications, and / or training. The full salary range for certain locations is listed below. U.S. employees are eligible for paid time away as described below, subject to Cisco's policies :

10 paid holidays per full calendar year, plus 1 floating holiday for non-exempt employees

1 paid day off for employee's birthday, paid year-end holiday shutdown, and 4 paid days off for personal wellness determined by Cisco

Non-exempt employees

Exempt employees participate in Cisco's flexible vacation time off program, which has no defined limit on how much vacation time eligible employees may use (subject to availability and some business limitations)

80 hours of sick time off provided on hire date and each January 1st thereafter, and up to 80 hours ofunused sick timecarried forwardfrom one calendar yearto the next

Additional paid time away may be requested to deal with critical or emergency issues for family members

Optional 10 paid days per full calendar year to volunteer

For non-sales roles, employees are also eligible to earn annual bonuses subject to Cisco's policies.

Employees on sales plans earn performance-based incentive pay on top of their base salary, which is split between quota and non-quota components, subject to the applicable Cisco plan. For quota-based incentive pay, Cisco typically pays as follows :

1.5% of incentive target for each 1% of attainment between 50% and 75%;

1% of incentive target for each 1% of attainment between 75% and 100%; and

Once performance exceeds 100% attainment, incentive rates are at or above 1% for each 1% of attainment with no cap on incentive compensation.

For non-quota-based sales performance elements such as strategic sales objectives, Cisco may pay 0% up to 125% of target. Cisco sales plans do not have a minimum threshold of performance for sales incentive compensation to be paid.

New York City Metro Area :

$152,400.00 - $255,100.00

Non-Metro New York state & Washington state :

$134,300.00 - $224,800.00
