Special Education Teacher

The Part-Time Special Education Teacher (up to 28 hours per week) provides targeted instructional and behavioral support to students with identified learning needs. This role ensures that students can access the curriculum, participate meaningfully in the school day, and make progress toward their individualized student educational goals.
Depending on school needs, the position may support one individual student or provide broader assistance within the classroom and during transitions throughout the day.

Responsibilities

Instruction & Individual Student Educational Plan Support

• Modify class curriculum and instructional materials based on the requirements of an individual student educational plan.
  
  

• Provide direct instruction in math, literacy, or other core subjects when needed.
  
  

• Deliver push-in or pull-out support as outlined in student schedules and service plans.
  
  

• Monitor student progress and communicate observations to the lead teacher and support team.
  
  

Classroom & Student Support

• Help students follow class routines, transitions, and daily activities.
  
  

• Maintain a calm, safe, and supportive learning environment for both the assigned student and the classroom.
  
  

• Encourage positive social interactions and guide respectful communication with peers and teachers.
  
  

• Use positive, proactive behavior support strategies when challenges arise.
  
  

• Assist teachers with general classroom support when not working with an individual student.
  
  

Supervision & Engagement

• Supervise students during recess, breaks, lunch, and transition times to ensure safety and meaningful engagement.
  
  

• Model and encourage healthy peer relationships through structured activities and guided interaction.
  
  

• Support classroom activities, preparation of materials, and general supervision as needed.

Qualifications

• Certified in Special Education.
  
  

• Experience developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

• Orton-Gillingham training (Reading by Design, Basic Language Skills, Take Flight).

• Ability to design, adapt, and deliver instructional strategies that meet diverse learning needs.
  
  

• Experience with behavior-management and supportive intervention techniques.
  
  

• Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with teachers, support staff, families, and outside providers.
  
  

• Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  
  

• Demonstrated patience, empathy, and commitment to maintaining a positive, supportive learning environment.
