Job Duties :

The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking to hire a Behavior Specialist II who has experience working with Adults with Serious Mental Illness and Co-occurring disorders in a Behavioral Health Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) program for our Beach House day program.

Responsibilities :

  • Assist with organizing, and ensuring quality service delivery of Beach House.
  • Assist Beach House Supervisor and clinicians in the development, evaluation and direction of program.
  • Provide intra and inter agency communication and collaboration.
  • Promote city, unit, and program mission.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining policies to promote program effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Provide clinical assessment, clinical intervention, case management, vocational, crisis intervention and prevention, program coordination, and counseling services in a psychosocial setting with an emphasis on skill-building via psychoeducational groups and skill acquisition activities / duties.
  • Assist in community integration of Beach House consumers.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Maintain accurate and competent records.
  • Adhere to Medicaid regulations and licensure requirements.
  • Performs initial and on-going clinical assessments and develops individualized person-centered treatment plans, updating regularly
  • Completes progress notes, Care Plans, ISP's and quarterly reviews.

  • Hiring bonuses shall only be for new hires of original employment or reemployment as defined in Human Resources Policy No. 5.0.
  • $500 will be awarded in the first paycheck.
  • $1,000 will be awarded upon completing the six (6) month interim performance evaluation with an overall rating of “Meets Expectations”.
  • $1,500 will be awarded upon completing the employee’s one (1) year probationary period and a performance evaluation with an overall rating of “Meets Expectations”.

    Minimum Requirements :

    MINIMUMS : Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and / or experience, equivalent to five (5) years in fields such as psychology or special education, which utilize the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. May be required to have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Must be registered with the Virginia Board of Counseling as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) or QMHP-Trainee (QMHP-T). All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and / or City-wide emergencies.

    Preferences :

    Registered as a QMHP-T or QMHP in Virginia

    Bachelor's degree in a related Human Service / Behavioral Health field

    Two (2) or more years of Behavioral Health experience working with individuals with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) & co-occurring disorders

    Crisis Intervention / prevention experience

    Experience with clinical documentation required by Medicaid / Licensure regulations

    Experience facilitating psychoeducation groups for adults
