Job Summary :
The System Chief Nursing Officer (SCNO) has overall accountability for delivering competent, effective, and efficient nursing care at the highest level of quality and at the most prudent cost. The SCNO provides vision, establishes a nursing governance structure, ensures quality, provides strategic nursing management, fosters staff development, regulates nurse credentialing, fosters open communication and collaboration, and provides financial oversight in budgetary formation and compliance. In addition, the SCNO represents the nursing teams at meetings of the governing body and keeps board members apprised of the work being accomplished by nurses throughout the health system. The SCNO also represents nursing on other systemwide committees, such as finance, human resources, quality, and patient safety.
Job Requirements :
Education and Work Experience :
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN), or related field : Required
- Master's Degree in nursing or related field, or the knowledge and skills associated with an advanced degree or written plan to obtain these qualifications : Required
- DNP Degree in Nursing Executive Leadership : Preferred
- Ten years’ progressive nurse executive leadership experience in a large, healthcare system : Preferred
- Career of progressively higher level leadership roles in multiple types of hospitals and health care organizations and experience in organizations where continuous improvement has been part of the company's fabric. : Preferred
Licenses / Certifications :
Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice : RequiredCertification in Executive Nursing Practice Exam (CENP) or Nurse Executive Advanced (NEA) Certification : PreferredEssential Functions :
Sets the vision and direction for nursing throughout the health system in alignment with organization's vision, values and culture. Provides strategic direction by establishing goals and clearly defined targets to achieve them. Collaborates with nursing leadership at the market level to ensure that goals are clearly articulated and easily understood. Promotes the participation of nurse leaders in decision making.Leads a nursing governance structure for nursing staff, nurse managers, nurse educators, and senior nursing leadership to discuss challenges, issues, and concerns that affect patient care and management activities. Identifies systemwide nursing quality indicators and analyzes and benchmarks quality data to determine the overall level of nursing's clinical performance. Targets quality performance by implementing a care model and developing structures and processes that track and trend outcome measures. Evaluates clinical and administrative processes to determine best practices and works to standardize these practices throughout the health system.Identifies, develops, and maintains strategic academic partnerships to ensure the availability of a well-educated nursing workforce. Creates structures, processes, and positions resources to facilitate nursing education. Leads a team to develop a system approach / model for the professional development of nursing staff by setting expectations and designing goals, structures, systems, and metrics for nursing staff development (such as a clinical recognition program and national certification). Ensures that nurses at all levels of the organization remain competent in the care they provide to patients no matter where the care is delivered. Works to establish and maintain systemwide competency programs, where outcomes are reported through the systemwide nursing governance structure.Maintains positive relationships with market nurse leaders, providing overall guidance, insight, advice, and mentorship. Designs structured communication processes to ensure appropriate information is exchanged and discussed.Assumes responsibility for uniformly determining nursing staff workload throughout the system. Formulates staffing plans and acquires necessary resources to ensure consistent application across the care delivery system.Performs other job-related duties as assigned.Organizational Requirements :
