Position Overview
The Academic Advisor has responsibility for providing academic advising to students. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Provide academic advising to first-year students in the College of Business Administration, as well as other students who are exploring transferring into the college. Maintain appropriate advising notes in student files. Academic advising duties may include :
a. Discussing transition issues including differences between high school and college. Communicate the value of a Marquette University Jesuit education and review college course expectations.
b. Assist students in exploring career and majors by providing curriculum information and graduation requirements.
c. Provide comprehensive advising by connecting students with various campus resources and assisting students with academic and personal concerns.
d. Assist students through course selection and registration questions, answer email questions, set up appointments and proactively reach out about concerns.
e. Contact students with academic deadlines and dates.
f. Work with various populations including RWAR, probation, advanced standing transfer students, and prospective students by providing specialized review, feedback and support.
g. Participation in ongoing campuswide advising training and coordination of advising efforts across colleges.
2. Represent and contribute to new freshmen registration, SPARK and orientation College of Business Administration-specific activities and meetings with students. Participate in presentations, meetings and advising sessions with students and parents.
3. Assist with the recruitment, onboarding, and training of college advising team members. Serve as a faculty resource on advising issues and handle students referred by faculty.
4. Regularly consult with the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate programs on issues of communication and outreach, outcomes assessment and process improvements to best serve the undergraduate business population. Review and collaborate on advising handouts used throughout the year.
5. Contribute to planning and organizing for College of Business Administration student success events by contacting and recruiting appropriate offices / departments, alumni, faculty, and students for participation.
6. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Bachelor’s degree, preferably in academic advising or counseling.
A minimum of 3 years of related experience.
Ability to work in a high volume, fast paced, deadline-oriented environment
Ability to discern student needs, excellent public speaking skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to deal with diverse constituencies
Keep abreast of continuing changes in academic policies and procedures.
Keep abreast of changes in the Marquette Core
Curriculum, college, major, and minor requirements
Demonstrated attention to detail, professional attitude, and ability to maintain confidentiality
Flexibility to work extended and evening / weekend hours is required. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong computer competency, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, CheckMarq, ImageNow, the Online Bulletin, and others.
Experience in academic advising and counseling in a post-secondary institution.
Familiarity with academic support programs.
