Police Officer (Recruit)
The City of Avondale is seeking motivated, community-focused individuals for the position of Police Officer (Recruit). This is an exciting opportunity for individuals seeking to launch a career in law enforcement and make a meaningful impact in our community.
Application Process
1. Submit an Online Application on the City of Avondale's Career page at www.avondaleaz.gov/careers
Applications are being accepted from March 30, 2026 through April 12, 2026.
2. Take the FrontLine National Written Exam with the National Testing Network. After submitting your application, it will be reviewed within 48 business hours. Passing applicants will receive an email with instructions on how to take the written exam, submit college credits to waive the written exam, or transfer previous NTN written exam results to the City of Avondale.
Important Information:
- Take Exam: The City of Avondale will provide you with a voucher code to take the written exam at no cost via email. If you do not use the voucher code, you will be responsible for the full fee of the exam.
- Deadline to complete the NTN Exam: April 21, 2026. Exams can be taken in person or virtually.
- We do not require you to take Parts 1 and 2 of the assessment or the physical agility test.
- Minimum passing scores: Reading 70 | Writing 70
- A practice exam is available through NTN for $24.95.
Exam Waiver: Applicants with 64 or more college credit hours from an accredited institution may waive the exam.
Prior Exam: If you passed the NTN exam within the past 12 months (since 03/30/2025) with minimum scores of 70 in Reading and 70 in Writing, you can transfer your scores to the City of Avondale through the NTN website for a $12.00 fee.
All testing must be completed by Tuesday, April 21, 2026. After the testing window closes, candidates will not be permitted to register to test or submit existing scores. Individuals who do not complete both portions of the testing process (application and written exam) will not be eligible to continue in the recruitment process.

Essential Functions
Enforces Arizona state laws and City ordinances while providing quality customer service to the Avondale community. Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, conducts criminal investigations, promotes public safety through education, prepares reports, testifies in court, and completes required training and administrative duties. Officers may also be assigned to specialized units requiring additional training and expertise.
- Patrol designated areas via vehicle or on foot.
- Respond to calls for service; conduct interviews and investigations.
- Gather evidence, write detailed reports, and testify in court as needed.
- Arrest suspects and enforce local, state, and federal laws.
- Engage in community policing and problem-solving initiatives.
- Perform additional duties such as warrant service, traffic enforcement, training, and booking.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must be 21 years of age by Police Academy graduation
- Must have a valid Arizona Driver's License at the time of hire
- Successful completion of the Arizona Police Academy and Arizona Police Officers Standards and Training (AZ POST) Certification
- Above average physical conditioning: includes running, climbing, crawling, and possessing the ability to pass and maintain an entry-level officer's physical fitness requirements
- Existing knowledge of the use of force, application of criminal law, constitutional law, and current tactics used in law enforcement is preferred
