Summary :

The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and supporting the production processes used in the manufacturing of custom fire apparatus. This role bridges engineering design and production execution-ensuring safe, efficient, and repeatable builds across chassis, body, and final assembly operations. Reporting to the Manager of Special Projects, the Manufacturing Engineer works closely with production supervisors, warehouse teams, and product engineering to improve manufacturability, reduce waste, and enhance throughput on the shop floor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

Operational Process Development

Develop, document, and implement manufacturing processes, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and detailed work instructions for assembly, fabrication, and installation of fire apparatus components.
Design and deploy jigs, fixtures, and tooling to ensure consistent assembly quality and adherence to engineering specifications.
Partner with production leadership to balance workflow, improve line efficiency, and eliminate production bottlenecks.
Evaluate and refine plant layout, workstation ergonomics, and material flow to support lean, safe, and efficient operations.

Production Floor Problem Solving & Issue Resolution

Actively identify, analyze, and resolve technical and process issues encountered on the production floor, collaborating directly with production supervisors, team leads, and operators.

Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring or complex problems and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to sustain improvements.

Maintain visibility on floor operations to proactively identify potential build challenges, part fitment issues, or design discrepancies.

Communicate findings and resolutions with stakeholders, ensuring follow-up to confirm issue closure and verify process adherence.

Late Process Change (LPR) Management

Serve as the primary liaison for all Late Process Change Requests (LPRs) initiated from production.

Manage the full lifecycle of LPRs-from initial submission and documentation to coordination with Engineering for review, approval, and implementation.

Track and report LPR status to Operations and Engineering leadership, ensuring timely feedback and communication to the production floor.

Verify that approved changes are properly documented in engineering drawings, work instructions, and ERP systems to maintain configuration control.

Manufacturability & Technical Interface

Serve as the key contact between Engineering and Operations to ensure designs are production ready.

Provide manufacturability feedback during design reviews (DFMA principles) to improve assembly efficiency and serviceability.

Develop and maintain technical documentation supporting training, audits, and process compliance.

Support ERP system utilization to ensure process data, routings, and BOMs accurately reflect current production standards.

Continuous Improvement

Identify and lead initiatives to reduce waste, improve first-pass yield, and increase overall manufacturing efficiency.

Apply Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and Kaizen principles to drive measurable performance improvements.

Lead data-driven improvement projects focused on safety, quality, and productivity metrics.

Support cross-functional value stream mapping and corrective action activities.

Qualifications :

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).

2-5 years of experience in manufacturing engineering within heavy-duty vehicle, specialty truck, or equipment manufacturing.

Strong understanding of assembly processes, fabrication methods, and material handling for low-volume, high-complexity products.

Demonstrated knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles and tools.

Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) for tooling and layout design.

Experience with ERP systems (Microsoft Dynamics, Epicor, or equivalent) and process documentation tools.

Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence across production, engineering, and warehouse teams.

Practical understanding of safety, ergonomics, and quality standards within a mixed-model assembly environment.

Physical and Work Environment :

This role operates in both office and manufacturing environments. The position requires regular time on the production floor for process validation, troubleshooting, and collaboration, as well as computer-based work in an office setting.

Physical Requirements :

Frequent walking, standing, bending, and reaching; occasional lifting or moving of objects up to 40 lbs.

Periodic use of hand tools or inspection instruments; occasional work in kneeling or crouched positions.

Environmental Conditions :

Exposure to manufacturing noise (often above 85 dBA), welding light, and common shop materials such as oils, dust, and solvents.

Occasional vibration from pneumatic and electric tools; may work near moving mechanical parts or energized systems.

Required use of PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and safety footwear in designated areas.

Office Environment :

Extended computer and desk work, with typical office activities such as phone and document handling.

Occasional tight deadlines and multitasking in a fast-paced operations setting.
