The job summary involves performing general duty police work involving the protection of life and property; the enforcement of laws and ordinances; prevention and investigation of crimes and maintenance of order and positively engage with community members on an assigned shift. Work is performed independently and as part of a team. Tasks are completed with general guidelines and require independent judgment. Contribute to the Department and City's vision, mission, and goals in the performance of all job duties.
The essential functions include contributing to an environment of respect and teamwork, fostering a culture of equity and inclusion, responding to emergency and routine dispatched calls, patrolling the city on an assigned shift, answering 911 calls and complaints, administering emergency first aid, stopping traffic violators, using de-escalation techniques, utilizing specialized equipment, enforcing all applicable laws, managing situations professionally, maintaining a high standard of physical fitness, searching for lost or wanted persons, directing traffic when required, determining when a lawful search or arrest can or should be attempted, developing knowledge about known offenders, appearing in court to present evidence and testify against persons accused of crimes, writing police and other related reports, providing assistance and directing citizens to appropriate resources, taking direction from a police supervisor, participating in community engagement activities, participating in training programs as required, and remaining current with legislation, court rulings, department policy, and relevant technological advancements as it relates to assignment.
Education, experience, and license requirements include a high school degree or equivalent, being at least 21 years of age at the time of examination, ability to read and write the English language, lawful permanent resident or US citizen, ability to pass entrance examination successfully and meet the minimum medical and health standards adopted by the Civil Service Commission, valid Washington State driver's license by date of hire, stringent personal background investigation including polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, medical physical including a drug-screening test, and driving record check. For lateral police officers, at least 12 months experience within the last 36 months as a full-time, paid, commissioned police officer is required. Additionally, lateral police officers with experience in Washington state must have successfully passed a WSCJTC Basic Law Enforcement Academy or its equivalent recognized by the WSCJTC. Lateral police officers with experience not attained at an agency in Washington State are required to pass the WSCJTC Basic Law Enforcement Equivalency Course.
