At Gunfire Games, we’re dedicated to creating ambitious combat-driven worlds and unforgettable gameplay. Our team’s work includes The Darksiders Series , Remnant : From the Ashes , Remnant II , and Chronos , and we continue to push the boundaries of enemy and encounter design.
We’re looking for a Junior–Mid Boss Designer to help build challenging, memorable boss encounters for our upcoming titles. This role is focused specifically on combatant and boss design , not level design or general game design.
What You’ll Do
- Design, prototype, and implement boss and combatant behaviors using Unreal Engine.
- Work hands-on with Blueprints and state machines to build attacks, abilities, and encounter logic.
- Contribute to pacing, difficulty, readability, and tuning of boss fights.
- Collaborate with animators, programmers, and artists to bring bosses from concept to fully playable encounters.
- Iterate based on team feedback to refine mechanics, timing windows, tells, and balance.
- Support debugging and troubleshooting AI or behavior issues throughout production.
- Follow the project's combat design direction to ensure consistency with the game’s overall feel.
Who You Are
You’re passionate about combat design, especially bosses, enemies, or high-intensity encounters.You have hands-on experience with Unreal Blueprints, state machines, or gameplay scripting related to combat.You understand gameplay timing, animation coupling, telegraphs, and player readability.You prefer working on enemy / combat systems over level layout, puzzle design, or narrative design.You communicate well, enjoy cross-discipline collaboration, and are excited to learn and grow.You’ve created combat-focused work, with experience appropriate to a Junior or Mid-level designer (student / indie / mod projects or shipped titles).You’re proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to building responsive, polished combat experiences.You have a portfolio that demonstrates boss or combat design work , such as :
Playable prototypes or videos of boss encounters or enemy AIDocumentation explaining mechanics, phases, telegraphs, or design intentBlueprint / state machine samples or breakdowns of implementation(Applications without combat-focused examples will not be considered.)
Bonus XP (Not Required, but Nice to have)
Experience building boss encounters, enemy archetypes, or AI behavior trees.Technical animation familiarity (root motion, montages, sync markers).Combat scripting experience (abilities, phases, aggression logic).Understanding of readability, telegraph design, and player feedback loops.Comfort with tuning difficulty and balancing combat stats.This role focuses exclusively on boss and combat design. It is not a general game design or level design position.
Additional duties may be assigned. This position may be offered on a temp-to-hire basis.
Pay range :
$60,000-$80,000. Title level and base pay offered will be based on candidate’s skills, experience, and other professional considerations.
