The City of Virginia Beach is looking for a dedicated Traffic Signal Electronics Technician I to join our team.To ensure the smooth operation of our traffic control systems. As a Traffic Signal Electronics Technician I, you will play a crucial role in troubleshooting and repairing traffic control devices, maintaining data communication equipment, and performing both corrective and preventive maintenance on traffic signal control systems.
****** Note: Selected candidates not already possessing a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be able to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License Instruction Permit within six (6) months of employment and then get a full Class A or B CDL license within the first year of employment – the probationary period. Failure to obtain a Class A or B CDL will result in termination.
Traffic Signal Electronics Technician I responsibilities will include:
Read and understand schematics, site plans, maps, and engineering drawings.
Troubleshoot or repair problems regarding traffic control devices, data communication equipment, and cables.
Must understand the menu-driven platform that most Electronic and Computer devices utilize to navigate within the device.
Performs corrective and preventive maintenance on traffic signal control equipment to install new and maintain existing traffic signal installations.
Under general supervision, constructs new testing equipment and modifies existing test equipment to maintain a state-of-the-art testing infrastructure.
Under general supervision, installs and tests traffic control equipment in new or modified traffic signal installations to ensure operational accuracy.
Performs preventive maintenance of existing traffic signal installations to identify defects and ensure the continued proper functioning of signal equipment operations.
Performs preventive and corrective maintenance required to maintain the computerized traffic signal system.
Prepares technical reports and compiles a list of necessary materials.
May be responsible for assisting engineers with incident management and signal system modifications in the Traffic Management Center.
Occasionally operate a crash truck for traffic control
Occasionally operate a Boom Auger to repair signals.
Occasionally operate heavy equipment to transport poles and reach high levels.
The Ideal Candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Ability to apply principles and practices of electrical and electronic theory.
Ability to understand technical manuals for the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.
Ability to work with electricity; operate and maintain computerized signal and communication equipment.
Skill in the use of equipment such as trenchers, concrete saws, hand tools, electrical testing equipment, usage of a digital multimeter, bucket trucks, various support equipment & PPE.
Skills in checking voltages (AC & DC), reading resistance, and amperage. Knowledge of changing Ethernet adapter settings, such as IP, masking, and gateway, on electronic devices. Skills in making connections, such as RJ45 connections, coaxial cable, and fiber connections.
*** This position requires individuals to be on a rotating weekly on-call/stand-by duty for responding to emergency calls regarding malfunctioning traffic control devices.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: High school or GED plus three years experience in the field of corrective and preventive maintenance of traffic signal control equipment and associated with such positions as computer service/repair technician, or digital radar repair technician; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical. A valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) may be required.
