Job Description and Duties

Interested in a field-based job where you will get valuable experience in wildlife disease surveillance, biological sampling, and hands on work with big-game wildlife? This position will provide an opportunity for prospective candidate to address an emerging wildlife disease in California and contribute to positive protection for wildlife. The successful incumbent will support Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) sampling of deer and elk and assistance with other wildlife management projects based in Siskiyou County, California. Duties will include collection of CWD samples from hunter harvested or other ungulate mortalities, staffing voluntary hunter check (CWD sampling) stations, and responding to deer or elk mortalities including field necropsies and reported deer-vehicle strikes. There will also be the opportunity to assist wildlife biologists with surveillance of other wildlife diseases, assist with wildlife captures and monitoring, and use of specialized wildlife management equipment including telemetry receivers and game cameras. Training on correct data collection and sample handling will be provided. Incumbents must be willing to handle dead or live wildlife and to work in remote wilderness areas.

The Environmental Services Intern classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions

Extensive time will be spent in the field driving on dirt roads, using 4-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles, and working in remote and rugged terrain under adverse weather; ability to elevate and carry 40 pounds.

Ability to operate a vehicle legally and safely on public roads; possess a valid Driver's License.

Travel to field sites for training and to meet with other regional staff will be required. Comply with a regional policy that generally prohibits dogs in the workplace. Occasionally work long days and weekends. Ability and willingness to handle ungulates and other wildlife; use a computer keyboard several hours a day. Willingness to do routine work such as data entry. Staff will be required to wear a uniform where they can be identified in the field.

    Special Requirements

    Must be able to elevate heavy and irregular items up to 40 lbs.

    Ability to use a computer keyboard in a sitting and / or standing position several hours a day.

    Ability to hike 1-5 miles over irregular terrain.

    In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate :

    Special Personal Characteristics : Knowledge of Basic understanding of wildlife ecology, environmental science, and disease management, particularly with wildlife diseases like CWD. Familiarity with biological sampling methods and wildlife handling. Strong attention to detail and maintain organized records. Good written and verbal communication.
