Project Summary
The Script Writer develops written content for NSFs digital audio and video platforms translating complex scientific programs research outcomes and agency initiatives into clear engaging messaging for diverse audiences. This role also supports web and print content creation in compliance with federal accessibility and plain-language standards.
Role Summary
The Script Writer produces high-quality scripts for NSF podcasts videos and multimedia content. The role also develops and edits web and print materials ensuring that scientific and technical concepts are communicated accurately and accessibly. All work must comply with the Plain Writing Act of 2010 Section 508 accessibility standards and NSF branding guidelines.
Primary Responsibilities
Task 2 Web and Print Content
- Write and edit articles white papers fact sheets blogs press releases web pages and other publications on science topics of stakeholder interest including potentially controversial topics.
- Translate complex scientific and technical concepts into plain language for non-expert audiences.
- Draft and edit web content summarizing policies and guidance for proposers and awardees.
- Conduct research and fact-checking by collaborating with OLPA staff program officials and scientists.
- Ensure all written products comply with federal plain-language and accessibility standards.
Task 4 Audio and Video Content
Develop scripts for NSF video podcast and multimedia productions.Adapt scripts for multiple audiences and channels from students and the public to researchers industry NSF staff and government officials.Collaborate with multimedia and digital teams to ensure clarity engagement and factual accuracy in all scripted content.Conduct subject-matter research and interviews with program officials and scientists to inform script development.Writing Samples Requirement
Submit four writing samples demonstrating ability to communicate scientific content effectively (2 for web / print content and 2 for audio / video scripts).Minimum Qualifications
Minimum 5 years professional writing and editing experience including at least 3 years writing about scientific or technological subjects.Experience producing both short- and long-format content including press releases fact sheets blogs reports and web pages.Experience conducting research and fact-checking using source documents and SME interviews.Degree in journalism communications or a science-related field (preferred).Ability to distill complex scientific and technical topics into clear compelling language for diverse audiences.Proficiency in AP Style plain-language writing and editing for scientific accuracy.Familiarity with federal communication requirements including the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and Section 508 compliance.Knowledge of SEO and answer-engine optimization (AEO) principles.Preferred Qualifications
Experience writing for federal agencies scientific funders or research-focused organizations.Experience developing scripts or other content for audio and video productions.Familiarity with NSF programs initiatives and federal review / clearance processes.Ability to tailor messaging for multiple audience types from technical experts to the general public.Professional Attributes
