Job Summary
- The Project Estimator is responsible for preparing comprehensive cost analyses and estimates related to materials labor, equipment, subcontractors, and overhead associated with project installations. This role plays a key part in supporting the branch’s sales and pre-construction efforts by ensuring accurate, competitive, and timely project estimates.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and facilitate the weekly Sales and Estimating Meeting, reviewing the bid schedule with the Branch Manager, Project Estimating Team, and Business Developer.
- Attend all Pre-Job “Turnover/Kickoff” meetings and weekly Staff Meetings with other departments and middle managers.
- Manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring effective planning and coordination for upcoming work.
- Participate in all Design-Build projects, providing budget estimates or Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) projections as needed.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Project Estimators to ensure consistent performance and professional growth.
- Utilize standard estimating software to prepare and present data to management.
- Gather, calculate, and compile takeoff data to support bid proposal estimates.
- Perform plan takeoffs, spreadsheet data entry, and detailed analysis of project plans, specifications, and construction details.
- Conduct cost analyses, including material, labor, equipment, subcontractor, and overhead expenses.
- Prepare quantity and labor estimates and obtain subcontractor pricing; develop estimates where no predetermined standards exist.
- Partner with the Branch Manager and Head of Pre-Construction to prepare and review project estimates for completeness and accuracy.
- Ensure all bids include a scope letter with qualifications and exclusions specific to each project.
- Evaluate project documents for constructability and value engineering opportunities.
- Maintain up-to-date pricing information from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Analyze bids for competitiveness, margins, and closure strategies.
- Develop and maintain resource databases for products, vendors, subcontractors, and regulatory requirements.
- Support the overall goals and objectives of both local and regional teams.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Landscape Horticulture, Civil Engineering, Construction Science, Construction Management, or related field preferred
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in estimating or pre-construction
- Familiarity with On-Screen-Takeoff (OST) and HCSS preferred.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook); experience with Microsoft Project or Primavera Construction Scheduling software.
- Demonstrate strong work ethic and attention to detail.
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven customer service and relationship management skills
- Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus.
Physical Demands/Requirements:
- Constant operation of a computer and other office equipment, such as a laptop, a cell phone, and printers/copiers
- Position is sedentary; must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of time.
Work Environment:
- This role works in an indoor office work environment.
