Managing Structural Engineer

General Statement

Under general direction, performs supervisory and administrative professional engineering work in the structural design of reinforced concrete foundations, bridges, buildings, dams, locks and similar structures.

• Assigns, coordinates and supervises work done by subordinates; rewards, disciplines, directs or adjusts grievances of other employees or effectively recommends their hiring, transfer, suspension, layoff, recall, promotion or discharge.
• Assigns work and discusses the scope of the assignment with the project architect / engineer.
• Supervises the work of the Structural Design Section in the preparation of designs.
• Prepares written correspondence to the Board of Commissioners, and other departments of the District, outside government agencies and private firms and individuals.
• Evaluates budgetary needs for the Board of Commissioners, other departments of the District, outside government agencies, and private firms and individuals.
• Acts or represents Division Head upon request.
• Analyzes bids made by contractors and makes recommendations.
• Confers with and coordinates with various divisions and departments to evaluate needs for future projects at District facilities.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Absolute Requirements

Registration as a Structural Engineer in the State of Illinois.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in civil or structural engineering and eight years of full-time, post-degree structural engineering experience. Four years of this experience must have been in work related to the District's design activities, three years of this experience must have been in the supervision of degreed engineers and one year must have been in an administrative capacity.

Substitution

Full-time graduate study in structural engineering may be substituted for the required non-specialized experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.
