Job Description Saint Peter’s University is seeking an experienced candidate to join our team as the Assistant Director of Residence Life. Saint Peter’s University, inspired by its Jesuit Catholic identity, commitment to individual attention, and grounding in the liberal arts, educates a diverse community of learners in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs to excel intellectually, lead ethically, serve compassionately, and promote justice in our ever-changing urban and global environment. The University’s main campus is in Jersey City, a city rich in arts and culture, less than 5 miles from New York City.Reporting to the Director of Residence Life, the Assistant Director of Residence Life serves as a member of the department’s management team and provides leadership and direction to the department staff. The Assistant Director of Residence Life position is responsible for creating a climate in the residence halls that supports academic and personal development through supervision of staff, programming, and program oversight. The position provides leadership for the day-to-day management of the residence hall communities, serving approximately 500-800 students. The Assistant Director of Residence Life will provide direct supervision and leadership to two Master’s level Community Directors and indirect supervision of the Graduate Assistants and RA student staff. The position works closely with the Director of Residence Life to oversee all staff recruitment, selection, training, and professional development, supports the department’s day-to-day functions, and provides emergency response and crisis management. Additionally, the Assistant Director will provide support to the department and the Director of Residence Life in implementing all facets of student housing operations, including, but not limited to, occupancy management, oversight of marketing and communications, IT and housing systems, summer and break housing, housing-related issues, overall building maintenance, etc. This is a full-time, 12-month, live-on position that includes participation in a campus-wide on-call rotation. Ideal candidates will have experience with residential education, strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, familiarity with Colleague, Maxient, Residence by Simplicity, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and excellent written and verbal communication. A Master’s degree and at least 2-3 years of professional experience in Residence Life and/or Student Affairs is required. Salary Range:$45,000 – $50,000 Duties & Responsibilities Supervision
  • Supervises two Community Directors (CDs) assigned to the residential campuses.
  • Provides regular individual/group supervision on a weekly basis and completes written evaluations each year.
  • Develops and implements all training for the Community Directors in conjunction with the Director of Residence Life.
  • Assists with elevated student mediation/conflict resolution and works with the Community Directors to make recommendations for room switches for residents who have completed the roommate mediation process.
Residential Curriculum
  • Responsible for the oversight and routine upkeep of the Residential Programming Model and Residential Education initiatives from year to year.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to strategically infuse their services throughout the Residential Curriculum. These departments include, but are not limited to: Campus Ministry, Campus Safety, Counseling and Psychological Services, Office of Student Involvement, the Dean of Students, Center for Engagement and Experiential Learning, Health Services, Center for Academic Success and Engagement, Recreational Life, Dining Services, etc.
  • Creates continual assessment initiatives to ensure goals and objectives are being achieved through the Residential Curriculum.
Resident Assistant Training
  • Develops and implements all training for the Resident Assistants (RAs) in conjunction with the Community Director staff and Director of Residence Life. This includes, but is not limited to, Fall Training, Spring Training, In-service Training, and online training modules.
  • Collaborates with divisional and university partners to ensure proper Resident Assistants (RA) training. These partnerships include, but are not limited to: Campus Ministry, Campus Safety, Counseling and Psychological Services, Office of Student Involvement, the Dean of Students, Center for Engagement and Experiential Learning, Health Services, Center for Academic Success and Engagement, Recreational Life, Dining Services, etc.
  • Oversees the Resident Assistant Evaluation process that the Community Directors will use to evaluate each of their staff members on a yearly basis.
Resident Assistant Selection
  • Responsible for the oversight of the recruitment and selection processes for the Resident Assistants. This includes the returning and incoming RA process and the final selection and placement of the RAs.
Technology
  • Develops and maintains the Office of Residence Life’s umbrella within the University’s online engagement platform (i.e., Peacock Connect/Presence).
  • Helps manage the Office of Residence Life’s social media accounts and the departmental email account to ensure emails are being answered in a timely manner.
  • Routinely works with a variety of platforms that include, but are not limited to: Maxient, Colleague, Residence by Symplicity, Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Datatel, Canva, etc.
Budget Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with the Director of Residence Life to oversee a budget for Residential Education-related initiatives (i.e. RA and Department programming, Resident Assistant Training, Resident Assistant Selection, Residential Curriculum, etc.).
  • Works with the Residence Life Administrative Assistant and Director of Residence Life to ensure that the petty cash that the Resident Assistants (RAs) and Community Directors (CDs) are utilizing is up to date and meets all University requirements.
Conduct and Crisis Response
  • Serves as a conduct hearing officer for varying levels of incidents that occur on campus.
  • Responsible for the management and referral of critical incidents.
  • Participates in a rotating on-campus duty responsibility. This includes supervising the campus on weekends, weeknights, and vacation periods and during emergencies as requested.
Assessment Reports
  • Compiles data from related databases into reports such as Residential Curriculum initiatives, Resident Assistant (RA) related objectives, and collections of other reports as requested.
  • Assists the Director with assessment reports and implementation reports.
  • Oversees the annual Office of Residence Life Survey that is sent out to the entire residential population to complete at the end of each academic year.
  • Responsible for the production of various reports.
Standard Department Responsibilities
  • Assists with other duties as assigned by the Director or divisional leadership.
  • Ensures that the Administrative Assistant is informed about all Residence Life, RA, and student-related issues to disseminate information to internal and external constituents accurately.
  • Attends and participates in regularly scheduled staff meetings and individual supervision with the supervisor.
  • Responsible for explaining and enforcing departmental and campus policies.
  • Maintains accurate records in order to submit various reports as specified by the Director.
  • Provides support to the department and the Director of Residence Life in implementing all facets of student housing operations including, but not limited to: occupancy management, oversight of marketing and communications, IT and housing systems, summer and break housing, housing-related issues, overall building maintenance, etc.
  • Participates in marketing efforts put forth by the department, which may include participation in Accepted Students Days, Open House, etc.
  • Actively helps recruit and retain students using a variety of tactics that include, but are not limited to: day-to-day activities, assisting with Peacock Prep Days, and Orientation.
  • Serves on departmental, divisional, and university committees.
  • Approaches work with a problem-solving lens to provide excellent service to students and a dynamic residence hall community on campus.
  • Works respectfully with all staff, students, and parents regardless of their race, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, national origin, gender, age, or disability.
  • Communicates the Jesuit philosophy and University policies to the residential community, to parents, students, and personnel as appropriate.
  • Maintains high professionalism and serves as a positive role model to staff and students.
Qualification Standards
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in Residence Life and/or Student Affairs is required.
Education
  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field.
