Before/After School EL Literacy Tutor (Middle School) Location: North Andover Middle School (NAMS)
Supervisor: Principal or Assistant Principal
Schedule: 3-days/week, before or after school for 4- minutes each day for 16 weeks
Job Summary
The After School ESL Tutor will provide targeted linguistic and academic support to multilingual learners (MLs) in grades 6-8. The primary focus is to assist students in developing English literacy. The tutor will use a structured, evidence based phonics program with ELs to improve their fluency and comprehension as measured by the DIBELs assessment every two weeks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Targeted Instruction: Deliver small-group or individual tutoring sessions using Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) strategies and Research-Based literacy instruction that responds to gaps as shown by DIBELs assessments
- Lesson Planning: Use available literacy data to drive instructional decisions and materials such as Wilson, OG, and/or Lexia.
- Progress Monitoring: Consult existing DIBELs data and contributes to bi-weekly progress monitoring efforts with the Reading teachers at NAMS and/or Special Education Liaison
- Social-Emotional Support: Create a culturally responsive and welcoming environment that values students' home languages and backgrounds while encouraging English language risk-taking.
- Collaboration: Communicate progress, lesson plans and materials with Assistant Principal
Qualifications
- Certification: Valid Massachusetts Educator Licensure
- Education: Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
- Experience: Proven experience working with middle school-aged adolescents; prior experience with English Learners preferred
- Skills: * Fluency in a second language (specifically Spanish, Portuguese, or Arabic) is highly desirable but not required.
- Deep understanding of the WIDA Standards and Can-Do Descriptors.
- Ability to differentiate instruction for students at varying ELP (English Language Proficiency) levels (Levels 1-4).
- Credentials and experience in a structure phonics and/or literacy curriculum
Compensation & Terms
- Salary: Compensation is set according to the NATA Unit A Contract (2023-2027). Hourly rate $40/hour
- Employment Period: This is a non-tenured, seasonal position based on grant funding (Title III) and student enrollment.
- Background Check: Candidates must clear a CORI and fingerprint-based SHRY check per NAPS policy and Massachusetts law.
