Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit
Job Description
Responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to reduce tax burden and compliance cost, and identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while serving as the primary client contact for complex nonprofit tax issues. Applies knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption, and unrelated business income issues. Recognizes, communicates potential risks, anticipates changes in tax policy, and makes top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. Acts as a critical member of the regional Nonprofit Tax team, marketing and networking within the area of expertise, maintaining client relationships, and serving as the primary contact for complex inquiries.
Responsibilities
Ensure compliance with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensure internal teams comply with firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
Research complex issues as needed, frame issues clearly and concisely, and report analysis to appropriate stakeholders. Involve firm specialists as appropriate.
Assist with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective solutions to maximize client benefits, particularly by reducing current and future taxes. Apply combined tax and business knowledge to recommend solutions.
Develop and implement work plans to include or organize Specialized Tax Services assistance on ongoing projects.
Serve as a technical resource to peers within the region and manage written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance.
Ensure client service teams comply with firm policy relative to Written Tax Advice.
Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to benefit clients and the firm, including reducing taxes or expenses and providing nonprofit tax benefits.
Review studies of tax implications and offer clients alternative courses of action.
Research and implement nonprofit tax strategies, including experimentation with promising new strategies.
Identify and leverage lessons learned on prior projects, and provide input on how to improve processes and methods.
Supervise Associates, Senior Associates and Managers on all projects; review work and provide comments; train on current software tools; act as a career advisor; schedule and manage workload; provide performance feedback; train on research skills; frame projects for delegation.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics OR Bachelor’s degree in any other focus area and a CPA certification, required.
Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred.
Eight (8) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and / or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting / professional services experience, required.
Supervisory experience, required.
CPA certification or Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction) or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA), or equivalent, required.
Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role, preferred.
Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, required.
Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software, preferred.
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to effectively delegate work, develop and manage a team of tax professionals, compose written tax advice, maintain client relationships, and act as primary client contact for presentation of issues and resolutions.
Strong analytical, research, critical thinking, and decision‑making skills.
Ability to work well in a team environment.
