Director, Plant Operations

Position Summary
Responsible for the operations of assigned department. Demonstrate productive and efficient management skills. Excel in identifying and controlling critical cost elements; thereby promoting quality awareness and achieving the highest standard of excellence. Assists in formulating departmental budgets and adhering to established standards. Ensures performance improvement initiatives are implemented. Monitors staff performance. Collaborates with staff, physicians and the Chief Operating Officer to ensure compliance with policies and procedures and accurate implementation in accordance with patient care standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, Facilities Management, Construction Management, or related field (Master's preferred).
- Minimum 2-5 years of experience in hospital plant operations, facilities, or engineering management.
- Minimum five (5) years of supervisory experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of healthcare facility regulatory requirements
- Proven leadership, budgeting, and project management skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with hospital executives, clinical leadership, and regulatory agencies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft applications
Duties and Responsibilities
Position Specific Standards
- Able to program and operate Building Automation Systems
- Basic knowledge of HVAC systems and their operations
- Demonstrated leadership abilities
- Able to manage and train entry-level personnel
- Must be knowledgeable in Local and State codes including AHCA, and Joint Commission.
- Plans, coordinates and directs the functions and activities of the Department of Plant.
- Ensure continuous efficient and economical operation of the hospital's equipment, machines, plant, and building.
- Oversees the Environment of Care to identify, assess and control environmental/safety hazards.
- Oversees regulatory compliance under the direction of the Environment of Care Committee.
- To ensure the compliance with Environment of Care as defined by Joint Commission, AHCA, and other regulatory agencies.
- Oversee department budget and stay within limits set by Administration.
- Oversee all construction and design.
Environment of Care Standards
- Proactively conducts department rounds and reports findings related to Environment of Care to Safety Officer or other responsible personnel, then follows-up to assure timely and satisfactory resolution/closure.
- Participates with PGH Environment of Care Team during their scheduled rounds, reviews findings, then follows-up to assure timely and satisfactory closure.
- Complies with PGH infection control initiatives including departmental hand-washing monitoring/compliance.
- Provides department-specific training for new employees and once annually for current employees that addresses specific employee expectations and responsibilities regarding fire drills/safety, disaster response, unit security, clinical equipment use, and hazardous waste disposal.

- Ensures employees adhere to the 5/10 Rule.
- Ensures employees adhere to the AIDET Connection.
- Ensure employees adhere to Telephone Standards.
- Identifies and communicates opportunities for improvement of service and care.
Quality Standards
- Communicates and collaborates with other departments in addressing patient care issues and in formulating performance improvement activities.
- Participates in performance improvement teams as assigned; develops and implements strategies to ensure PI compliance.
- Attends and actively participates in medical staff and hospital committees and meetings, as assigned.
- Participates in hospital wide patient experience initiatives i.e. HCAHPS compliance and patient experience committee.
- Participates in hospital wide Performance Improvement Council meeting; attends monthly meeting, assists other directors in the development and monitoring of department specific indicators.
- Assures state of regulatory readiness at all times on assigned unit and/or department.
- Assures timely review and turnaround of concurrent data and drill down.
Compliance Standards
- Achieves Compliance with State, Federal, Joint Commission regulations and standards.
- Follows all hospital and Steward Healthcare policies and procedures.
- Exhibits high ethical standards and integrity.
- Ensures that staff completes Ethics and Compliance Initial and Annual Training timely
Infection Control Standards
- Responds to Infection Prevention and Control request for follow up within the requested time frame.
Risk Management Standards
- Ensures that all eSRM events are investigated and closed within 7 days of event being reported.
- Ensures Risk Manager completes corrective action plans by due date.
- Works closely with department directors and attends their staff meetings as needed. Follows to completion all requests/reports regarding concerns and contributes actively to risk management education.
- Works closely with quality department and contributes actively to patient safety initiatives. Implements all patient safety activities.
