Summary Statement

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is seeking a motivated professional for our Data Network Telecommunications Technician position. The Data Network Telecommunications Technician works under general direction assisting the information management bureau in the installation and maintenance activities of a multi-worker shop by determining workloads, establishing priorities, performing network communication cabling work, assigning technicians, and ensuring that project and maintenance work is completed on time. The Data Network Telecommunications Technician installs and maintains various types of electronic communication and phone systems. Performs related tasks as required. This is a competitive classification.

This recruitment will be used to establish an 18-month eligibility list to fill current and future vacancies. Apply promptly; application period may close without notice.

Essential Functions (not intended to be all inclusive)

  • Schedules and / or coordinates services (e.g. repairs, installations, removal of equipment, preventative maintenance, etc.) with contractors, vendors, DPS units, and supported agencies.
  • Initiates coordinates, and completes new, upgrade, and repair projects with all DPS-related network equipment and sites and with contractor and vendor-related projects that support DPS and designated agencies. includes supervision of contractor and / or vendor resources.
  • Installs, removes, modifies, maintains, repairs, and inventories various mobile, portable, and hand-held pieces of communications equipment and other electronic equipment (e.g. routers, switches, video equipment, copiers and printers, public address systems, televisions, site security alarm and control equipment, cameras, remote fence and gate opening and communication equipment, etc.) for DPS, DPS supported governmental agencies, and vendors and contractors supporting DPS.
  • Installs, programs, removes, modifies, maintains, repairs, and inventories antennas and wiring on vehicles, buildings, and poles requiring climbing and working on ladders.
  • Communicates orally and in writing with Department, other agency personnel, and vendors.
  • Installs, programs, removes, modifies, maintains, repairs, and inventories various forms of equipment and material to support communication equipment.
  • Installs, programs, removes, modifies, maintains, repairs, and inventories various types of phones and their support equipment as designated.
  • Documents job-related activity.
  • Reviews and reports system, network, and data security violations to ensure safety of equipment and sensitive data and ensure compliance with federal, state, and judicial requirements.
  • Responds to 24-hour / day, 7 day / week emergency call-outs to perform and / or facilitate emergency equipment repairs anywhere in the DPS statewide network.
  • Acquires, purchases, and distributes electronic parts, tools, and programming aids to facilitate the installation, modification, repair and maintenance of communications and other electronic equipment.
  • Analyzes, searches for, and eliminates sources of communications interference.
  • Cleans work areas (e.g. garages, parking areas, work benches, etc.) using brooms, mops, and other cleaning equipment and ensures the areas are clutter-free and used for their intended purpose.
  • Inventories, maintains, schedules for periodic maintenance and repairs, transports, inspects, and cleans assigned vehicles and trailers.
  • Generates hand drawings and computer-generated drawings, creating site documentation (e.g. layout of equipment within a room, electrical distribution at a site, and special site considerations and needs, underground and building conduit locations, network diagrams, etc.).
  • Performs inspections of communication rooms for safety issues (e.g. fire dangers, structural damage to buildings, heating and cooling equipment operation, general site cleanliness, rodent and insect infestations, etc.) using visual observations against previously noted conditions and adjusts conditions (e.g. reporting violations, cleanup, adjusting equipment, coordination with contractors, vendors, and DPS units, etc.) to clear safety issues.
  • Conducts performance tuning for systems to provide an efficient, cost-effective environment and adequate response time for customers of the DPS network.
  • Remains current on job-specific procedures through training courses, professional associations, and trade publications to apply appropriate methodologies. Attends workshops, professional training courses, and classes related to supervision skills.
  • Catalogs, maintains shop technical service manuals and reference books.
  • Fabricates wooden and / or metal racks and / or brackets and other support material for use during the installation of communications equipment and other electronic equipment.
  • Installs, repairs, splices, tests, and terminates various forms of telecommunications and electrical wiring and cabling (e.g. copper, fiber, coax, etc.) to ensure proper impedance matching and connections between various pieces of electronic equipment.
  • Installs and troubleshoots failures on-site controllers, routers, switches, personal computers, data devices, copiers, and printers used within the DPS organization as well as other governmental agencies supported by DPS.
  • Repairs and maintains various electronic test equipment (e.g. testers, splicers, etc.) and various hand tools (e.g. drills, tools, and other specialized equipment, etc.).
  • Cleans communications equipment and other electronic equipment that has been removed from various locations in preparation for reinstalling the equipment into a new location.
  • Operates, maintains, inventories, and complies with operating instructions and general orders for assigned vehicles and trailers as needed and certified for.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

KNOWLEDGE OF :

  • The principles, applications, and physics of analog and digital electronics, data communications networks, servers, computers, peripherals, network devices, antennas, transmission lines, cabling, data circuits, and other related systems connecting to the network.
  • Principles and practices of network technology (e.g., osi model, ip addressing, data flow, etc.).
  • Various electronic supply houses and vendors.
  • Project management.
  • Department general orders, bureau and section policies and procedures.
  • Sources of information on technology trends.
  • SKILL IN :

  • Gathering technical information for trouble calls from non-technical personnel.
  • Working with others to accomplish tasks.
  • Following detailed oral and written instructions.
  • Working independently with minimal supervision applying wire and coaxial cable termination standards (codes, power handling capabilities and loss characteristics of different types of coaxial cable).
  • Using electronic test equipment and documentation to diagnose telecommunications equipment problems, effect repairs, or ensure proper performance.
  • Oral and written communications to exchange information, explain procedures and techniques, and answer questions in a clear, logical manner.
  • Using industry part codes and cross-reference replacement guides to determine appropriate replacement parts.
  • Maneuvering and operating vehicles (e.g. automobiles, trucks, trailers, etc.) in all weather and hazardous conditions throughout the state (e.g. extreme temperatures, snow, ice, steep or narrow unimproved roads, etc.) at all times during the day and night.
  • Using the DPS capital inventory system.
  • Thinking clearly and responding quickly during times of emergency and adapting to new situations and unusual working environments.
  • The use, care, and selection of appropriate hand tools.
  • Reading and comprehending technical shop manuals, manufacturer specifications, and troubleshooting guides used in installing network equipment.
  • Installing or removing equipment in vehicles.
  • Giving detailed instructions as necessary
  • The use of department, contractor, and vendor financial processes and forms (e.g. time accounting, requisition, purchase order, requests for information, requests for work, etc.).
  • Evaluating and identifying the source of the problem within a data network system with a minimum expenditure of time and resources.
  • Scheduling maintenance on a variety of communications and support equipment.
  • Applying wire and coaxial cable termination standards (codes, power handling capabilities, and loss characteristics).
  • Making necessary modifications (e.g. fabricating and installing special brackets and fixtures) for installing and repairing telecommunications equipment
  • Servicing and maintaining emergency power systems (uninterrupted power supply systems, etc.).

  • Minimum Qualifications

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :

    Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and successful completion of a formal electronics technology program of instruction from a recognized public or private school or the armed forces service school or three (3) years of experience as a DPS service employee assigned to this area.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

    Must possess a valid Arizona driver license.

    WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Able to work in enclosed and tight spaces including manholes, vaults, under buildings and trailers, ceilings, and other spaces necessary to install network cabling and equipment.

    Progression to the next step requires an overall performance rating of at least "Standard" in the last 12 months.

    Must successfully complete the examination process.
