JOB SUMMARY

Under general direction from the Head Coach, the Assistant Coach helps develop strategies for developing and maintaining the Track & Field and Cross Country programs. The Assistant Coach is responsible for overseeing specific aspects of the sports program including, but not limited to, skill-work, planning and execution of practice and games, opponent scouts / film breakdown, on-campus and off-campus recruiting, in-season conditioning programs, fundraising events, and various administrative duties which includes team travel.

Must be attentive to detail, keep accurate records, and possess an ability to work with a diverse constituency, including but not limited to students, parents, coaches, faculty, staff administrators, prospective students, and other outside contacts. Must foster an environment of NCAA compliance. Additionally, staff are expected to embrace the NCAA DIII philosophy and UCSC Principles of Community. The Assistant Coach reports directly to the Head Coach. Work schedule often includes : evenings, weekends, and holidays.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary : By Agreement $25 / hour

Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

    JOB DUTIES

    75% - Coaching

  • Under guidance of the Head Coach, develops technical aspects of player coaching.
  • Analyzes performance and instructs participants in program strategies and techniques to prepare them for competition. Observes players while they perform to determine the need for individual or team improvement and participates in student athlete performance.
  • Ensures adherence to all governing rules, university, department, conference, NCAA policies and procedures and NCAA compliance. Represents and promotes professional conduct, university good will and high standards at all events and matches and may assist in coaching at competitive events.
  • Assists with and leads practice and conditioning sessions.
  • Travels to contests by driving University, rental and / or personal vehicle. This may include University vans or rental vans.
  • 15% - Recruitment

  • Assists in the recruitment of prospective athletes within the framework of the university, department, conference and current D3 bylaws and manual.
  • Participates in on and off campus recruiting and managing recruit documentation.
  • Travels for recruiting or conference attendance by driving rental and / or personal vehicle.
  • 10% - Fundraising / Admin

  • Participates in fundraising activities for the program and department including camps and clinics.
  • Attends department wide meetings, committees and events.
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with athletic participants, staff, and parents of student athletes.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making; be an effective problem solver.
  • Strong verbal communication skills; vital for dealing with our players and staff, as well as within the larger department, alumni, and recruits and their families.
  • Strong written communication skills; vital for dealing with our players and staff, as well as within the larger department, alumni, and recruits and their families.
  • Specialized knowledge of the team sport or activity, as well as basic technical expertise in coaching principles.
  • Current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies.
  • Leadership skills to mentor and develop student-athletes, assistant coaching or program instruction staff and skills in effective assistant coaching.
  • Proven ability to teach specified sport to individuals and the team as a whole. Personal experience with specified sport.
  • Superior organizational skills required in order to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong social media and online communication skills to represent the University and athletics department programs.
  • Applied knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat and basic computer skills.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of Hudl and Front Rush.
  • Previous experience working or competing at an NCAA Division 3 Track and Field program.
  • SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature / weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
  • Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs, and work an alternate work schedule shift as required.
