The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified Medical Assistant - Certified (MA-C) for the Cedar Creek Corrections Center in Littlerock, WA.

The Medical Assistant performs all duties under the supervision of the healthcare provider in a safe and effective manner and within the scope of their practice as defined by state law and administrative code so that patient care provided is safe, effective, efficient and clinically appropriate. The Medical Assistant uses tools, techniques, physical and cognitive skills and abilities to perform tasks as delegated by a healthcare provider.

Under the general supervision of the licensed Practitioner and / or lead of the Registered Nurse, the Medical Assistant will assist in providing patient care, which may include performing routine medical records duties, some administrative support, and other clinical duties to assist in the smooth operation of Health Services.

Duties

Assist in providing patient care services within the scope of licensure and as delegated by the licensed Practitioner or Registered Nurse :

  • Provide assistance in all direct delivery of patient care by the Provider, which includes but is not limited to :

Vital Signs

  • Visual Acuity
  • Ear irrigations
  • Injections / Vaccinations
  • Basic laboratory functions (venipuncture, CLIA waved laboratory in-house testing) and transports labs
  • Electrocardiography assessments (pulmonary function / peak flow)
  • Observe, document in the medical record, and report to the Practitioner or Registered Nurse :
  • Patient history and relevant data

  • Current health status (physical and emotional)
  • Situation of patient, family, groups, and / or communities by interview, observation, and inspection
  • Recognize and report abnormal vitals and labs
  • Carry out licensed Practitioners' written, verbal, and telephone orders in a timely manner.
  • Monitor patient's condition following procedures : recognize and report emergent / urgent problems or symptomology of common medical illness to the licensed practitioner or Registered Nurse.
  • Respond to emergencies within a facility by providing emergency medical care, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Other tasks directed by the Physician, ARNP, or Physician's Assistant, that fall under the legal scope of practice of a MA-C.
  • Provide clinical support to the Health Services Team to ensure continuity of patient care and efficient clinical operations :

  • Attend briefing from off-going staff upon arrival on shift for pertinent clinical information, including patient's current health status, urgent diagnostic reports, observation rooms, staffing concerns, etc.; brief on-coming clinical staff as appropriate before departing from duty.
  • Monitor patient flow in the outpatient clinic to assure timeliness of care and efficient clinical operations.
  • Ensure exam room is prepared for each patient, including medical records, instruments, etc. to expedite patient flow and support practitioner, as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with Patient Service Representatives to ensure patient scheduling, rescheduling, check-in, or no-show is documented appropriately.
  • Medical Records Documentation :

  • Legibly document subjective and objective clinical findings and the actions taken to deliver healthcare.
  • Maintain confidentiality of protected health information (PHI).
  • Effectively communicate verbally, in writing, and via computer or other electronic media with other healthcare personnel, custody, and other institutional personnel.
  • Other duties :

  • Participate in facility and / or statewide continuous quality improvement processes, committees or work groups.

  • Qualifications

    Required Qualifications :

  • Initial and unblemished / unrestricted licensure in the State of Washington as a Certified Medical Assistant
  • Expierence working as a Medical Assistant in an outpatient clinic setting.
  • Certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support and Basic First Aid.
  • Ability to work competently in Microsoft Outlook, Work and Excel.
  • Ability to learn job specific DOC programs needed to perform work assignments.
  • In addition to the above, this position also requires :

  • Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Ability to adjust work schedule to meet organizational needs.
  • Maintain professional work relationships with staff, the public, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work with diverse staff.
  • Prioritize and complete tasks in accordance with timelines and expectations.
  • Ability to research, accumulate, organize, and communicate technical information orally, in writing, in person, and using technologies such as telephone, electronic mail, and computer equipment.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced, detail-oriented environment.
  • Ability to deescalate and listen to emotional / upset patients.

  • Read, understand, and apply policies and procedures.
  • Desired / Preferred Qualifications :

  • Completion of a Medical Assistant - Certified program accredited by the American Association of Medical Assistants or the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA).
  • IV Certification / Phlebotomy.
  • Familiarity with both front and back office operations in an outpatient clinic setting.
  • Experience actively participating in the quality improvement process for any business, including brainstorming, proposing improvement plans, or measuring success.

    Insurance Benefits

    Retirement and Deferred Compensation

    Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).     Social Security

    All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

    Public Service Loan Forgiveness

    If you are employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, and meet the qualifying criteria, you may be eligible to receive student loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

    Holidays

    Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.

    Note : Employees who are members of certain Unions may be entitled to additional personal leave day(s), please refer to position specific Collective Bargaining Agreements for more information.

    Full-time employees who work full monthly schedules qualify for holiday compensation if they are employed before the holiday and are in pay status for at least 80 nonovertime hours during the month of the holiday; or for the entire work shift preceding the holiday.

    Part-time employees who are in pay status during the month of the holiday qualify for the holiday on a pro-rata basis. Compensation for holidays (including personal holiday) will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status in the month to that required for full-time employment, excluding all holiday hours. Pay status includes hours worked and time on paid leave.

    Sick Leave

    Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Overtime eligible employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month, earn a monthly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Overtime exempt employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month do not earn a monthly accrual of sick leave.

    Sick leave accruals for part-time employees will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.

    Vacation (Annual Leave)

    Full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rates specified in (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Full-time employees who are in pay status for less than 80 nonovertime hours in a month do not earn a monthly accrual of vacation leave.

    Part-time employees accrue vacation leave hours in accordance with (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on a pro rata basis. Vacation leave accrual will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment.

    Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.

    As provided in , an employer may authorize a lump-sum accrual of vacation leave or accelerate the vacation leave accrual rate to support the recruitment and / or retention of a candidate or employee for a Washington Management Service position. Vacation leave accrual rates may only be accelerated using the rates established WAC 357-31-165.

    Note : Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for exempt employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.

    Military Leave

    Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.

    Bereavement Leave

    Most employees whose family member or household member dies, or for loss of pregnancy, are entitled to five (5) days of paid bereavement leave. In addition, the employer may approve other available leave types for the purpose of bereavement leave.
