Chief Financial Officer Overview

Easterseals offers a unique opportunity for a highly motivated and accomplished professional to join its team as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) . The ideal candidate will be an executive leader with exceptional strategy, communication, analysis, listening, and risk management skills who thrives in a fast‑paced environment and has a collaborative mindset.

Easterseals DC MD VA (ESDCMDVA) is leading the way to full equity, inclusion, and access through direct and life‑changing disability and community services. We are an independently incorporated affiliate of the international Easterseals network serving DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia governed by a local Board of Directors to meet needs in our community.

Since 1945, ESDCMDVA has worked tirelessly to enhance quality of life and expand access to healthcare, education, and employment. We take a holistic approach, providing comprehensive services to thousands of children and adults in our neighborhoods, no matter their disability, military status, income, race, or age. To help each child reach their full potential, we provide personalized child development and early intervention services. To improve health and reduce isolation in adults with disabilities, we offer engaging activities and expansive resources. To enable military families to integrate into the community, we provide a suite of services, including employment support and mental healthcare. And to sustain families and caregivers, we provide comprehensive services and supports.

Our Mission is to enrich lives and expand opportunities for all children and adults in our communities, including people with disabilities and military backgrounds. Our Vision is to create a hopeful, inclusive community where all people realize their potential and live meaningful lives. We achieve these goals by empowering all clients to overcome barriers to well‑being, regardless of race, ethnicity, socio‑economic status, or any other group affiliation. More than half the individuals we serve each year are of low or moderate income.

Our dedicated staff of approximately 300 professionals includes specialists in education, therapy, senior services, social work, assistive technology, nursing, and related professions. As part of the Easterseals international network, we draw on the resources of almost 25,000 professionals to stay at the cutting edge of service delivery.

Organizational Leadership and Governance Board of Directors

ESDCMDVA’s Board has been recognized with the “Excellence in Board Leadership” Award by The Center for Nonprofit Advancement and the “Best Board in the World” Award from Easterseals, Inc. The Board, particularly the Finance and Risk Management Committees, will partner closely with the CFO to advance ESDCMDVA’s operations.

Jon Horowitch, President & CEO, is committed to improving lives of individuals with disabilities, veterans & military families, and low‑income families. Jon joined Easterseals as a member of the Board of Directors in 2007 and became Chief Operating Officer in 2011. In February 2017, Jon was named President and Chief Executive Officer.

Before joining Easterseals, Mr. Horowitch had a long career in the for‑profit sector at leading companies including Capital One, Global Crossing, Credit Suisse, and AT Kearney and served on the Easterseals DC MD VA Board of Directors, as well as other volunteer positions. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and with honors in History from Williams College.

Senior Leadership Team

The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) brings an array of expertise, competencies, perspectives, and personality traits to the organization. The CFO will be a member of the SLT and be a key voice in achieving organizational objectives.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the organization’s President & CEO, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will serve as a key member of, and strong business partner to, the executive leadership team. The CFO will lead the production of accurate and timely financial reports and, based on the analyses generated, collaborate with the leadership team to make sound and informed business decisions. The CFO plays a critical role in strategically guiding ESDCMDVA into the future, while ensuring that current operations remain strong and that all internal and external financial reports are not only accurate, but also produced on a timely basis.

The CFO leads both the strategy and the day‑to‑day operations of ESDCMDVA’s finance and accounting function. This individual also enhances the leadership team’s understanding of the financial performance of each program area, as well as that of ESDCMDVA overall. He / she will devise, implement, and administer the organization’s overall financial budget and forecasts; lead financial programs and policies; oversee fiscal compliance with all regulatory and / or governing bodies; and manage a team of finance / accounting professionals. In addition, the Chief Financial Officer serves as a business partner to the Audit and Finance Committees of ESDCMDVA’s Board of Directors, provides support to the organization’s Board members, and works closely with other leaders and executive management.

The CFO will be a seasoned business leader who shares our organizational core values and has a demonstrated ability to :

  • build relationships both inside and outside the organization, particularly the Board, other members of the SLT, banks, and auditors
  • develop the members of his or her team and the financial capabilities of the entire organization; enhance organizational culture
  • develop and implement strategic plans and budgets
  • enhance quality, risk management, compliance, and organizational policies & procedures
  • communicate effectively
  • manage multiple priorities and meet project timelines; be both a strategic leader and hands‑on participant in the work of the team
  • Key Responsibilities

    The CFO will provide executive leadership and vision that furthers the mission through the effective management of the organization’s financial and human assets, business activities, and risk. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

  • As a senior member of the Easterseals team, help drive organizational strategy and performance – contribute thoughtfully to the overall organization
  • Lead the Finance functions of the organization
  • Deliver sound financial reporting and forecasting that supports appropriate decision making; make actionable recommendations based on financial results
  • Develop rolling three‑year plan to enhance Finance functions and lead the organization to ensure goals are met
  • Prepare materials for the Finance Committee and Board to ensure that they are able to provide sound strategic counsel and meet their fiduciary and governance obligations
  • Enhance the culture of financial management throughout the organization by training senior and middle management on financial management and analysis
  • Lead long‑term financial planning, including investments in operations and growth, as well as cost management in alignment with ESDCMDVA’s strategic plan and actively participate in the development and execution of all strategic planning activities
  • Oversee all financial team members, systems, and processes :

  • Oversee Finance team including Controller to ensure flawless management of financial operations, including but not limited to timely and accurate accounting, A / P and A / R, payroll, and insurance
  • Ensure ESDCMDVA has the necessary financial and accounting infrastructure to effectively and efficiently support operating needs
  • Deliver sound internal reporting that supports effective decision making, including overseeing budgeting, financial forecasting, and cash forecasting
  • Continuously improve processes and reporting mechanisms
  • Deliver timely and accurate reporting to meet requirements of banks and funders including state, local and federal grants and contracts
  • Enhance relationships with financial partners such as public accountants, lenders, and investment managers
  • Develop analysis of potential investments so they are effectively prioritized and, if implemented, their performance is evaluated
  • Stay abreast of emerging areas of / changes to financial management and systems so ESDCMDVA remains efficient and compliant with all rules and regulations
  • Oversee internal control safeguards and coordination of audit activities, including financial audits, governmental audits, and IRS form 990
  • Ensure accurate restricted funds accounting, including federal grants and other donor‑restricted contributions
  • Oversee ESDCMDVA’s financial policies to ensure appropriate controls are in place
  • Personal Characteristics

    The successful candidate will be a thoughtful, strategic individual with a strong drive for results, who applies a disciplined approach to continuously enhancing processes, systems, documentation, and training. He or she will be savvy at building relationships both inside and outside the organization and will have an appetite for both hands‑on activities and strategy‑setting and leadership. Strong business acumen will drive confidence from the Board and SLT colleagues, while operating skills such as organizing, planning, delegation, and team development will be crucial to building rapport and confidence of the staff.

    Key competencies for success include :

  • Financial Acumen and Leadership : Broad financial acumen and leadership capabilities to incorporate a higher degree of financial discipline into the operating mentality of ESDCMDVA. In an environment with growing programs, evolving funding sources, and the need for enhanced financial infrastructure, s / he will build strong relationships throughout the organization to garner the support needed to implement new processes and to effectively influence and hold the organization accountable for more rigorous financial controls.
  • Visionary Operational Partner : An executive with the ability to meet the needs of a complex, multi‑site organization. A strong grasp of best practices and the ability to set goals for transition and capability improvement, then lead implementation of the required changes is vital. Sets high standards for success and is willing to take calculated risks to achieve well‑defined goals. S / he will create relevant analyses and leverage data insights to improve strategic planning, financial planning, and forecasting and quickly translate complex information and inputs into actionable plans.
  • Ability to Succeed in a Not‑for‑Profit Environment : Demonstrated experience working successfully within a highly collaborative and collegial organization. Comfortable rolling up one’s sleeves and engaging in day‑to‑day operations. Passion for, and commitment to, ESDCMDVA’s mission.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated strategic leadership of finance and risk management functions; proven track record of success in all operational and strategic areas of these functions
  • Track record of building, supporting, and facilitating teams, including demonstrated success as an effective coach and mentor to staff
  • Deep analytic and problem‑solving aptitude and a questioning personality to understand the complexities and nuances of each issue
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple sites / lines of business; well‑versed in nonprofit accounting
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to digest and distill complex subjects into clear messages
  • Experience developing, overseeing, and tracking budgets, forecasts, and cash (restricted and unrestricted)
  • Expert at time‑management and bias toward action
  • At least ten years of progressive finance experience, including demonstrated strategic and operational leadership in a multi‑divisional organization
  • Bachelor’s degree
