Location : Hybrid (23 days / week in-office)
JAQUE Bethke Design is seeking an experienced Controller to lead the day-to-day accounting operations of our growing design firm. This role will manage financial reporting, month-end close, compliance, payroll oversight, and internal controls, while partnering closely with leadership to support strategic planning and business performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all accounting activities including billing / collections, AR, AP, general ledger, cost accounting, inventory, capital assets, and revenue recognition
- Oversee and / or prepare journal entries, invoicing, and reconciliations (administration may be supported by an assistant)
- Reconcile income statement and balance sheet accounts monthly and annually
- Prepare financial statements and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal filing requirements, including all company tax matters (income, sales, excise) and employee-related regulations
- Develop management reporting and external compliance reporting, including variance analysis against budgets / forecasts and prior periods
- Support sales tax reporting and compliance in coordination with third-party resources as needed
- Develop and document business and accounting processes that strengthen internal controls and ensure compliance with best practices
- Provide variance explanations for actual results compared to budgets / forecasts in collaboration with leadership and CFO
- Assist in preparing annual budgets and forecasts with the CFO and senior management
- Manage company bank accounts and oversee day-to-day cash flow
- Oversee payroll processes in coordination with a third-party payroll provider
- Lead annual audit preparation and serve as the primary point of contact for auditors and financial partners
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of all accounting records and reporting
- Partner with internal / external IT resources to improve accounting automation and systems efficiency
- Research technical accounting issues and provide recommendations aligned with company goals
Requirements
Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting compliance standardsMinimum 5+ years of relevant experience, demonstrated through one or more of the following :CPA experience
Accounting degreeIndustry accounting experience in design, architecture, and / or constructionProven experience managing month-end close, general ledger functions, and financial statement preparationHigh proficiency with Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, and related accounting / financial toolsStrong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to problem-solve independentlyAbility to communicate proactively and collaborate across teams and leadership levelsExperience managing internal and external financial / accounting professionals and business partnersAbility to work 23 days per week in-office; remaining time may be remote based on candidate preference and business needs
