The Tax Team within Schwab Asset Management (SAM) is primarily responsible for all tax matters relating to Schwab’s proprietary mutual funds, exchange‑traded funds (ETFs), and alternative products. The Tax Team is looking for a Senior Manager to support their growing team. This individual is responsible for ensuring the various tax requirements and regulations are satisfied for these products and works with other SAM departments on an ongoing basis. The role requires partnering with portfolio managers, product managers, fund accounting, trade operations, independent auditors, and financial reporting representatives. This person will document, implement and monitor internal controls for new products and securities, stay abreast of regulatory changes, and implement those changes. The Senior Manager will also be an active participant in new product initiatives and current product business changes. This is an individual‑contributor role.
Primary Responsibilities
- Responsibility for tax matters, including establishing tax policies for alternative product types and non‑traditional asset classes such as partnerships.
- Help oversee tax services of outside service providers to ensure deliverables are complete, accurate, and provided on time; assist with performance evaluation and recommend changes when necessary.
- Maintain internal control documentation and assist with the documentation of tax legal positions (ASC 740).
- Lead the financial statement audit process as it relates to the review of taxable income calculations and preparation of annual tax disclosures.
- Assist with the development, implementation, and documentation of new products and completion of new product strategies; perform or assist in technical research and analysis related to domestic and foreign tax issues affecting various product and investment types, fund qualification and compliance matters, and develop practical solutions.
- Lead the development and implementation of tax accounting and reporting policies and continually improve procedures to facilitate proactive identification, management, and resolution of tax issues.
- Lead the year‑end excise tax distributions process.
- Lead the shareholder tax reporting process.
- Review various tax filings (e.g., Federal, state, foreign, partner) and ensure timely and accurate filing.
- Work closely with other departments within Schwab and outside service providers such as fund accounting, portfolio management, marketing, transfer agency, financial reporting, product teams, sales strategy, inside counsel, independent auditors, and external tax authorities.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required.A minimum of 10 years of experience in taxation of partnerships and regulated investment companies (RICs) at a major accounting firm or in the asset‑management industry.Proficient knowledge of partnerships, RICs, financial instruments, and strategies.Strong project management, vendor management, and research skills.Preferred Qualifications
CPA or Master’s in Tax preferred.Proven verbal and written communication skills and ability to interact within all levels of SAM and with other external / internal partners.Proven organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to meet tight deadlines.Drive and skillset to identify areas of opportunity and implement effective change and automation.Proactively support business partners and overall company goals through collaboration and effective networking.Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, including ability to deliver clear and concise analysis.What’s in it for you
