Technical Architect

Join us in the role of Technical Architect at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).

Position Summary

The Technical Architect is responsible for the technical innovation, integration, documentation, and execution of the architectural and engineering design intent in conformance with the established scope of work, program, and budget objectives. Together with the Senior Designer, Project Manager, and / or Project Architect, the Technical Architect is the day‑to‑day co‑leader of the project in all project phases, with significant responsibilities in the Design Development through Construction Administration phases. The Technical Architect leads code review and analysis, material and systems research, specifications coordination, and construction documentation. They manage quality control procedures and timely reviews through all phases of the project.

Responsibilities

Establish technical resolution and innovation, integrating criteria and input from all disciplines into design solutions.

Establish, communicate, and maintain quality standards for documentation products for the full internal and external team.

Oversee research, review, and analysis of applicable codes and provide code parameters and restrictions early in the design process.

Oversee team in selection and assessment of construction and building systems.

When a Project Architect is not present, collaborate with the SOM High Performance Design Group to track energy, water, and carbon use intensities and provide documentation for AIA 2030 reporting.

Lead or oversee design and construction documentation, including vignettes, animations, drawings, and specifications, ensuring consistency with firm standards.

Develop, coordinate, and review technical specifications for the project.

Foster lasting and positive relationships with clients, the design community, and government agencies.

Assist the Project Manager in establishing project budget, schedules, and work plans.

Oversee implementation of the computer management program for the project and identify the Digital Design Coordinator when required.

Oversee the team’s construction-phase services scope and participate in contractor interview and selection where appropriate.

Attend and present at owner / architect design meetings and owner / architect / contractor meetings, reviewing and approving meeting minutes.

Attend and facilitate weekly internal project team meetings; develop agenda and project status updates.

Actively participate in local and firm-wide Technical Meetings and contribute to the advancement of technical activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a professional degree in Architecture or a related field.

Licensed in the state of practice; LEED or other green building accreditation preferred.

At least 10 years of experience or equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Strong understanding of sustainable strategies and principles, including familiarity withED or other green building rating systems.

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Proficiency in Rhino, parametric and rendering software, Adobe Suite, and Google Workspace; familiarity with Revit and AutoCAD.
