Note: The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is in process of developing and administering the Rail Safety Inspector, Senior (RSI-SR) classification examination. Under the direction of a Rail Safety Inspector- Supervisor (Superintendent) and the Program Manager, a Rail Safety Inspector- Senior performs these duties: provides technical support, training, mentoring and coordination in the field for Rail Safety Inspectors in five different railroad safety disciplines: Track and Structures, Equipment, Operating Practices, Signal systems and Hazardous Materials. The incumbent has an assigned region and works predominantly in the field; therefore, for economical time management, the incumbent has a home office in or near his/her region. He/she will be available for other statewide assignments and/or tasks, as deemed necessary.
Incumbent will be expected to travel periodically, often overnight to accomplish statewide responsibilities, and occasionally out of state for training and coordination with national organizations. This position also requires use of written and oral communication skills. Proficiency with communications-related technologies, including personal computer applications, telecommunications equipment, Internet, voicemail, email, etc. May conduct field inspections and attend meetings, the incumbent is required to wear personal protective equipment, including safety vest, hard hat, safety glasses and appropriate footwear.

This is an in-office position that has been identified as field-based. Field-based workers spend 50% or more time in the field, requiring onsite attendance to perform their duties. Their assigned headquarter office will be based on the selected candidate's primary residence location.

The mission of the Rail Safety Division (RSD) is to diligently strive to inspire safe and reliable rail transportation in California by promoting and enforcing railroad, rail crossing and rail transit safety; and by improving or establishing a positive rail safety culture therein, through our inspection and enforcement efforts and our resolve to look beyond the regulations. RSD strives to enforce state and federal laws, regulations, orders, and directives relating proactively and effectively to transportation of persons or commodities by rail. RSD is comprised of the Railroad Operations Safety Branch (ROSB), Rail Crossings and Engineering Branch (RCEB), and Rail Transit Safety Branch (RTSB).
