Position Information

TxDOT's Beaumont District is looking for a Material / Process Inspector I-III to join our Lab Team. Our lab team is responsible to perform testing of materials utilized in the construction of our state highways (e.g., flexible base, embankment, concrete aggregates) and ensuring that they meet the requirements detailed in TxDOT's Standard Specifications; thus ensuring the quality and longevity of our state's infrastructure.

Material Process Inspector I - B18 ($45,521-$71,055)

Material Process Inspector II - B19 ($48,244-$76,028)

Material Process Inspector III - B20 ($51,158-$81,351)

This position is for a Material / Process Inspector I, II or III. The Texas Department if Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicants' work experience, education, skill level, and other appropriate factors.

Position Description

Performs material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and / or at points of supply. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties :

Material / Process Inspector I :

  • Conducts nuclear density tests on subgrade, base and asphaltic concrete pavement.
  • Conducts pavement evaluations in the field.
  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors and material producers and suppliers.
  • Investigates compaction problems associated with hot mix asphaltic concrete.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
  • Secures, logs in and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing.
  • Drives / travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Material / Process Inspector II :

  • Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.
  • Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports.
  • Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements.
  • Conducts pavement evaluations in the field.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Secures, logs, in and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing.
  • Drives / travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Material / Process Inspector III :

  • Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.
  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, material producers and suppliers and field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
  • Orders equipment and supplies
  • Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
  • Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.
  • Conducts pavement evaluations in the field.
  • Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.
  • Observes tests and inspections and reviews reports from other inspectors; performs quality assurance for tests and inspections.
  • Secures, logs in and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing.
  • Drives / travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs.
  • Minimum Qualifications :

    Education : High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

    Experience :

    Level I : No experience required (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

    Level II :

  • 1 YEAR Laboratory work, material inspection or other eng-related work (experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)
  • Level III :

  • 2 YEAR Laboratory work, material inspection or other eng-related work(experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

  • Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Level I-III :

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and / or above 100 degrees for more then one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to vibration
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles / mechanical parts, high places / heat, or chemicals
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation
