ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Transportation (formerly known as the Traffic, Parking, and Transportation Department) oversees public parking and traffic operations, including pavement markings, crosswalks and bicycle lanes, operation of traffic signals, traffic study reviews, and permitting street obstructions and street closings. The department also oversees the Resident Permit Program. Additionally, the Department of Transportation works with the Transportation Planning Division (formerly at Community Development) in planning, reviewing, and developing proposals to improve the City's infrastructure and encourages walking, bicycling, and using transit.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Bicycle Educator is responsible for planning and delivering weekly bicycling workshops for adults. The educator will create a welcoming and engaging environment to support community residents at various bicycling skill levels in becoming confident cyclists. Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Organize and execute workshops on learning how to ride a bicycle and building skills for riding on city streets.
  • Prepare and practice lesson plans prior to workshops.
  • Provide group and individual instruction in bicycle riding skills to beginner riders.
  • Provide group instruction to intermediate riders practicing road readiness and building street skills on off-street paths and streets.
  • Lead instruction on etiquette and rules of the road, basic bicycle maintenance, and bicycle safety practices.
  • Select bicycle routes and assess risk for appropriate rider experience.
  • Promote workshops through social media, door-knocking, posting flyers, attending community events, and forming partnerships with various community organizations to ensure turnout.
  • Coordinate and maintain a fleet of about 10 City-owned bicycles and supplies; Manage delivery of bicycles and helmets to/from sites.
  • Help create an environment that fosters positive learning and skill development for new bike learners and intermediate-skilled riders across various skill levels.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Comfortable leading and instructing groups and individuals.
  • Values team-teaching methods.
  • Enjoys riding a bicycle and is able to ride for work.
  • Certified, or be willing to become certified, by the League of American Bicyclists as a League Cycling Instructor.
  • Reliable and punctual, with a strong work ethic. Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on details.
  • Positive, professional attitude and capacity to adapt quickly.
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record. Ability to drive a van.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience engaging meaningfully with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Experience riding in urban environments
Preferred:
  • Proficiency in one or more other languages, such as Spanish, Amharic, Bangla, Portuguese, Haitian-Creole, and Arabic is beneficial.
  • Basic knowledge of bicycle maintenance and repair, including how to repair and change a tube and repair breaks.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires travel to and through the City to workshop and community outreach locations, driving, walking, biking, bending, squatting, reaching, and stretching. Candidate must be able to stand and bike for two to four hours at a time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involved is mostly outdoors including congested city roadways in all weather conditions. This position is an in-person position.
