General Statement

Under immediate supervision, performs entry level structural engineering work in the design of steel, wood and reinforced concrete structures. May supervise sub-professional personnel.

  • Assists in the design and preparation of structural plans and specifications.
  • Reviews shop drawings for conformity with contract documents; prepares correspondence.
  • Assists in preparation of cost estimates and design calculations for structural components of projects.
  • Communicates with other staff members, contractors and vendors in regard to preparation of structural plans and review of shop drawings.

Other Job Functions

  • Makes field investigations and reports on conditions of structural components of facilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    • Environmental Conditions

    Typical office environment. May use standard office equipment and computer terminals.

    Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of professional structural engineering fundamentals as they apply to the construction, operation, rehabilitation, repair and maintenance of sewage treatment plant facilities, sewer collection systems and flood control systems.
  • Basic knowledge of structural design principles including concrete and steel design codes.
  • Some knowledge of recent developments, current literature and sources of information in structural engineering.
  • Skill in performing technical calculations.
  • Ability to understand and interpret detailed structural engineering designs and specifications.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to apply engineering formulas to routine mathematical equations.

    • Minimum Qualification Requirements

    Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in civil or structural engineering.

    Promotional Requirement

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • One year of service with the District as a Treatment Plant Operator I or Engineering Technician IV.
  • Civil service status as a Treatment Plant Operator I or Engineering Technician IV; or civil service status as an Engineer Trainee.
