Description

Under the direction of the assigned manager, provide appropriate and quality instructional, social, and physical activities for children within the Center; Plan, organize, and implement a developmentally appropriate program; and ensure a safe and pleasant learning environment for children.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is a specialized single level support classification allocated only to the Child Development Center. The Early Childhood Education Teacher is responsible for planning the instructional, social, and physical activities for children within the Center.

Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Develop, plan and implement developmentally appropriate experiences that are engaging, playful, build on what children know and understand, and can be individualized to accommodate different skill levels and learning styles.
  2. Provide for the care, safety, health, and nutrition of children by maintaining supervision at all times to ensure a safe environment; collaborate with the teaching team in coordination and implementation of emergency drills; cleaning and sanitizing the classroom/materials, dispensation of authorized medications, provide food service and other activities.
  3. Ensure that the Center is well maintained and orderly and that its appearance is clean, cheerful, safe and appropriate for children of all age groups; and report repair and maintenance needs to appropriate staff.
  4. Interact with children individually to encourage self-expression and language development; observe and re-direct behavior according to approved procedures. Refer to appropriate resources if needed.
  5. Answer questions, and provide appropriate examples, emotional support, friendly attitude, and general guidance to the children.
  6. Monitor, assess, and report progress of children's performance and behavior; identify and implement strategies to prevent and/or address children's challenging behaviors and implement strategies to help children resolve conflict.
  7. Perform a variety of clerical duties, such as maintaining files, entering data, using computers and maintaining center records.
  8. Maintain children's documentation and portfolios to perform assessments; complete assessments and conduct parent conferences to discuss children's growth and development.
  9. Provide a supportive learning environment for children's first and dual language acquisition, development and learning.
  10. Communicate and collaborate in partnership with families in a culturally appropriate and responsive manner to support young children's development.
  11. Work collaboratively with instructors/programs; Serve as a resource for student teachers and volunteers in the Center by modeling appropriate engagement and educational techniques answer questions as specifically and detailed as possible; refer students to other staff as appropriate.
  12. Provide content and material to conduct parent education meetings based upon standards. Respond to requests from parents.
  13. Provide support and input for the Center's program self-evaluation, training plan, and center goals.
  14. Participate in professional growth, or work-related training activities necessary for permit renewal.
  15. Participate in District and campus related activities as assigned.
  16. Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • Basic operations and services of a child development center.
  • General principles, techniques, theories, concepts, and practices of early childhood education and child development including proper redirection and care.
  • Multiple developmental, cultural, biological and environmental factors that affect behavior and children's development and learning.
  • Child guidance principles and practices.
  • Basic instructional methods and techniques.
  • Basic computer skills including spreadsheets, databases, and information searches.
  • Safety practices as applied to classroom and playground activities.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations governing child care and development centers.
Ability to:
  • Demonstrate a willingness and enthusiasm when working within the Child Development Center; Serve as an appropriate, effective, and positive role model while working at the Child Development Center
  • Actively and closely monitor and oversee the activities of children.
  • Ensure a cheerful and safe learning environment for children.
  • Observe and follow regulations of the California Community Care Licensing, Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), California Department of Social Services (CCTR), and California Department of Education (CSPP) and health and safety regulations.
  • Handle stressful situations.
  • Work independently, think critically and identify and solve problems.
  • Apply knowledge, practices, and procedures of Early Childhood Education.
  • Learn, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Give and follow verbal and written directions and instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered during the course of work.
  • Maintain confidentiality of center-related information.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to, understanding of, and the ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students, children and staff.
  • Operate modern computers, software, and office equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:
Completion of the twelfth grade, high school diploma, GED, or the equivalent supplemented by successful completion of a minimum of 12 college level units in early childhood education, child development courses.

Experience:
One year of experience of teaching or instruction in a child development center.

OTHER CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid first aid/CPR certificate within 30 days of appointment.
  • Possess a current Associate Teacher Permit or other permit issued by the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing authorizing the holder to be the teacher of record.
  • Must successfully complete a physician's report, immunizations in accordance with SB 792, 792 i.e. Pertussis (DTAP) and Measles (MMR) and criminal records clearance including the Child Abuse Index.

Physical Demands: Physical conditioning to ensure a safe environment for children; occasional moderate lifting and carrying requirements; frequent standing, bending, squatting and walking.

Work Environment: Work mostly takes place within an indoor and outdoor environment within the Child Development Center.

Hazards: Work may involve exposure to bodily fluids and cleaning chemicals.

This position is 25 hours per week, 10 months a year
