Community Behavioral Health - Faculty Position (Open Rank)
Department of Population Health Sciences

Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine
UT Health San Antonio, San Antonio, TX

The Department of Population Health Sciences (PHS) under the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine (LSOM) at UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) in conjunction with the NCI-Designated Mays Cancer Center (MCC) is seeking two applicants for open rank faculty positions (Tenure or Non-Tenure). The successful faculty will join the Population Health Sciences department with membership in our MCC Population Science and Prevention (PSP) Research Program.

PHS has twenty-one faculty from diverse disciplines (, social and behavioral sciences, epidemiology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, health systems science, and clinical informatics). Active areas of research include social determinants of health, cancer survivorship, and cancer health disparities. Similarly, the MCC PSP is embedded in a National Cancer Institute-designated Clinical Cancer Center with more than faculty conducting research in areas of basic science, translational research, clinical research and prevention, and personalized risk assessment. Both programs have established research portfolios in cancer care delivery, cancer screening, cancer survivorship, and dissemination and implementation of science research to promote health equity in rural and medically underserved communities. Our vibrant group of multidisciplinary faculty conducts research on a wide range of health issues, and there are opportunities to collaborate with clinical, and other faculty across the academic campuses of UTHSA.

Our goal is to recruit two faculty members who will establish meaningful community-based and community-engaged research in our diverse and medically underserved -county catchment area. The Department of PHS at UTHSA and the MCC are committed to reducing the burden of chronic illnesses among diverse populations, increasing prevention efforts, and facilitating access to care that is culturally sensitive and contextually appropriate.

Position Description: The successful Faculty candidates will be expected to establish an innovative, independent, collaborative, and extramurally funded research program with a focus on community-based participatory and/or community engagement research. The successful candidate will have track records of creativity and productivity, a desire to integrate into our exciting, collaborative, and growing community of researchers, and will be expected to mount a productive and innovative research program, with a specialty in community-engaged research. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research addresses Population Health Sciences priorities including but not limited to, engaging community voice, community development and resiliency, health disparities, and multi-level approaches to addressing systemic health inequity. We expect the successful candidate to have an established portfolio that includes community-based participatory research (CBPR), use of mixed methods, and considerable expertise working with medically underserved communities. The appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience. Faculty will be eligible to apply for grants from the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT), the second-largest cancer research-funding agency in the US. CPRIT also provides competitive faculty recruitment awards for instigators new to Texas.

Requirements and Educational Experience: Candidates for this position must meet the following minimum requirements:

• Experience with successful research proposal development and peer-reviewed publications focused on one of the research priorities listed above

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: A successful candidate will have strong training in CBPR methods with substantial professional experience in community engagement and mixed-methods research. Strong preference will be given to candidates with expertise to establish and manage a research program to develop novel methods in CBPR or innovative applications of existing methods. Candidates must possess excellent communication writing and academic leadership skills.

Working conditions: Work is performed in an office environment. The position requires travel to community sites, and regional/national travel and to attend professional and grant meetings, as well as meetings for the University of Texas System.
