Salary Range: ~ +/- $90,000 – $120,000 (Based on Experience & Certifications)

Overview:
A growing engineering and surveying firm is seeking a Survey Project Manager to lead field and office operations for construction layout projects. This role focuses on maintaining tight control of horizontal and vertical staking, ensuring quality delivery from pre-construction to final as-built documentation. The position is based in Chapel Hill, NC, with projects located within a 50-mile radius.
This is a leadership position involving direct crew supervision, budget oversight, and technical coordination with contractors and public agencies.

Key Responsibilities:
Project Execution & Technical Oversight:

• Attend pre-construction meetings, review plans/specs, and develop control strategies.
• Establish and maintain survey control networks using least-squares adjustments.
• Manage daily layout activities (grades, utilities, foundations, anchor bolts, paving).
• Supervise and mentor Survey Crew Chiefs; enforce safety and quality standards.
• Perform layout calculations, volume checks, and cut-sheets.
• Process data from GNSS, LiDAR, and UAV sources.
• Implement QA/QC processes, RFIs, and as-built verification.

Project Management & Financial Controls:

• Prepare proposals, fee estimates, and scope documents.
• Track progress against budget and schedule; address scope changes proactively.
• Coordinate with accounting for billing, invoices, and client communications.
• Provide regular progress updates to department leadership.

Required Qualifications:

• ~ 10+ years of progressive land surveying experience, with at least 5 in construction layout.
• Licensed NC PLS or ability to obtain via reciprocity within 12 months (CST Level III considered if on licensure track).
• Proven ability to manage multiple construction layout projects >$50k in survey fees.
• Skilled with robotic total stations, GNSS/VRS, laser scanning, and digital levels.
• Proficient in Trimble Business Center, Carlson Survey, and Autodesk Civil 3D.

Preferred:

• NCDOT layout experience (field and office)
• OSHA 30 Construction certification

• Projects are local—no long-distance travel.
• Field attire should align with safety and performance needs.
• Background check (5-year lookback) required.
