Charge nurses typically take a smaller patient assignment to assist the staff. There are nurse aides on the unit, but they may be pulled for sitters as needed. Equipment on the unit may include CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow nasal cannulas, which are managed by respiratory therapy. Shifts are scheduled six weeks in advance with weekend requirements every other weekend. Nurses may float to similar units but will not take on higher acuity patient loads. The unit experiences a fast-paced environment with high patient volumes, as they may admit up to 8-12 surgical patients daily while managing discharges.
