Overview

Reporting to the Director of Student Success, the Learning Specialist is responsible for developing learning and retention strategies and solutions for adult learners in graduate professional programs of TUC’s three colleges : College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Education and Health Sciences. The Learning Specialist works directly with students who are challenged by their coursework, testing, and board exams and provides remedial assistance to understand and overcome their deficits. Students self-refer and are referred by faculty. In addition to one-on-one advising, the Learning Specialist delivers workshops and teaches classes on learning strategies, study skills, test-taking skills, time management, stress reduction, and other topics related to learning outcomes. Touro has peer tutoring, study hall monitoring, food distribution and note taking programs that are supervised and managed by the Office of Student Success. Additionally, this person is responsible for supporting the review of requests for accommodations that are submitted by students and ensuring that approved accommodations are implemented and maintained throughout the students’ time at Touro.

Responsibilities

  • Direct academic support services to the diverse student population
  • Teach and develop learning strategy and time management courses, presentations, and workshops in virtual synchronous and asynchronous learning environments and in person learning environments.
  • Provide students with strategies on how to efficiently study based on their own learning preferences, including how to improve or adapt their own strategies for different course.
  • Assist and support the various programs in providing accommodations to students with documented disabilities.
  • Assist with University events such as Orientation, Commencement, and White Coat Ceremonies
  • Attend department, program, and university meetings and committees.
  • Coordinate and supervise virtual and on campus study hall
  • Supervise student Peer Tutors, Food Distribution Support and Study Hall Monitors
  • Coordinate peer tutoring program and provide orientation and training
  • Assess student learning styles, study skills and test-taking skills
  • Develop individualized study plans
  • Maintain case files for all students receiving academic services
  • Work with Director to develop and implement “early alert” systems and programs to identify and assess students who are academically at risk.
  • Monitor student academic progress directly with students and colleges
  • Incorporate findings for annual program evaluation for continuous improvements
  • Assist the Director in the review of requests for accommodations and consult with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs to determine eligibility
  • Work with faculty and staff to implement accommodations and ensure that confidentiality is maintained
  • Demonstrate the University’s core values of social justice, intellectual pursuit and service to humanity through their work.
  • Show a capacity to support and empower students from a variety of identities (race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender, sex, age,
  • Serve as a designated Campus Security Authority and Responsible Employee under the Clery Act and Title IX regulations, respectively.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours if necessary, some evenings and Sundays.
  • Supervise student Work Study workers
  • Supervise volunteers for food distribution events

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required (degree in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Psychology or English preferred)
  • Master’s degree preferred with a concentration in the field of adult learning, or counseling
  • Four years of experience in adult learning and assessment of learning deficits
  • Experience working with graduate level students to improve their study effectiveness, time management skills, and testing abilities
  • Experience working with graduate / professional level students
  • Experience with on line teaching environment
  • Experience with graduate level life sciences or health sciences preferred

    Maximum Salary

    USD $72,408.19 / Yr.

    Minimum Salary

    USD $61,546.96 / Yr.
