Summary

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief Operations, Office of Utilities and Power Plant Operations, Office of Assistant Director of Utility Distribution Services Division, Electronics Branch. The incumbent is an Electronics Mechanic in the Electronics Branch and may be assigned to either the Day or Evening Electronics Section.

Duties

Help

  • This is an Essential-Employee Position. The employee will be required to report to work during emergencies AND inclement weather situations.
  • Installs or assists contractors to install new systems or upgrades of existing devices and systems.
  • Aligns and balances analog circuits, tests analog and digital circuits and replaces faulty electronic parts and various solid state devices.
  • Identifies and troubleshoots the source and / or cause of operational problems on novel or improved systems when specifications and manuals are inadequate and incomplete.
  • Trains system users on system operation, maintenance and testing procedures. Provides advice and assistance to users as required.
  • Inspects, repairs and tests equipment and systems involved with construction, maintenance, overhaul and conversion projects.
  • Maintains, repairs and adjusts systems and system components. Aligns, balances and tests circuits. Replaces defective electronic parts and solid state devices as appropriate.
  • Maintains and calibrates testing and calibration equipment and instruments. Tests equipment following repairs to ensure it functions according to design specifications and operational requirements.
  • Schedules maintenance during periods when the equipment can be out of service without disrupting mission operations. Recommends replacement of equipment which is determined to be obsolete or beyond effective repair.
  • As needed, communicates with manufacturers representatives regarding design, functionality and maintenance of equipment and systems.
  • Uses ingenuity to solve unusual problems related to interference from other frequency generating equipment.
  • Adapts equipment to perform different functions to meet immediate objectives or assignments. And performs other related duties as assigned.
  • If selected at the WG-10 or WG-11, selectee will have non-competitive promotion potential to the WG-12. Responsibilities quoted at WG-12 level.

    Qualifications

    You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the job announcement.

    You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT(S) required for this position.

    For WG-10 :

  • Possesses a thorough knowledge of general smart building electronic applications, capabilities and limitations. Troubleshoots and repairs malfunctions. Evaluates and performs functional tests on items to determine the extent of repairs required, makes repairs and replaces defective components and parts. Has skill in interpreting and applying a variety of technical information such as technical orders, manufacturers' handbooks and repair manuals, schematics, block diagrams, mathematical expressions and similar documents while testing and repairing functionally independent electronic equipment. Assists higher graded electronics mechanics in developing, debugging or modifying diagnostic programs by recommending changes where necessary and identifying and investigating apparent contradictions between test specifications or test requirement documents and test programs.
  • For WG-11 :

  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of operating electronic principles such as microminiaturized digital and solid state integrated circuits, transistors, diodes, tube circuits, antennas, signal transmission, oscillation and amplification. Ability to troubleshoot and repair malfunctions where circuit theory must be used to understand the operation, not only of individual circuits but also the interaction of other circuits to create a malfunction. Evaluates and performs functional tests on items to determine the extent of repair required, makes repairs and replaces defective components and parts. Electronics mechanics at this level have skill in interpreting and applying a variety of technical information such as technical orders, manufacturers' handbooks and repair manuals, schematics, block diagrams, mathematical expressions and similar documents while testing and repairing functionally independent electronic equipment. Utilizes electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, pulse and signal generators, distortion and waveform analyzers, digital data generators, digital voltmeters, frequency and pulse generators and special test panels.
  • For WG-12 :

  • Possesses expert knowledge of operations, capabilities and limitations of electronic equipment and systems and practical knowledge of electronic theory and design. Skill in new and complex systems that have frequent engineering changes to improvise alignment, repair and operating procedures. Ability to solve operating and repair problems. Ability to interpret electronics drawings, specifications and schematics of complex operational systems. Skill in troubleshooting complex electronic systems that lack documentation. Trains lower level electronics mechanics and provides advice and assistance to users.
