SUMMARY/SCOPE:

Through dynamic and innovative approaches, Student Life isa robust division that provides students with opportunities for meaningfulengagement and transformation in the co-curricular context. The ResidenceDirector (RD) is a required live-in position.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to supervisingand leading a community of students with the goal of fostering a vibrantChristian community that is fully engaged in the academic and co-curricularlife of HSU. The RD is an essential partner in the education, development, andempowerment of the whole student.

HSU JOB FAMILY CLASSIFICATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administration:

Workwith the Director of Residence Life to manage living area budgets andUniversity credit cards for the assigned living area appropriately.

Communicateeffectively with residents, parents, staff, and faculty both verbally and inwriting.

Establishand maintain communication with Maintenance, Custodial Staff, and other campusoffices to ensure the living area is well maintained and secure for the well-beingof all residents and guests.

Communicateand assist Residence Life with timely coordination of housing assignments, roomconsolidations, room changes, check-in/out processes, and damage billing.

Conductfire drills once per semester in assigned living areas.

Conductregular building tours with Maintenance, Police, and Residence Life staff asneeded to ensure the safety and security of residents.

Walkthrough assigned living areas each workday to be aware of general conditionsand to personally build community.

Coordinateand schedule use of common spaces and building equipment.

Serveon rotating on-call duty coverage with other Residence Life staff, includingweekends and holidays.

Serveas the emergency building administrator for assigned living areas.

Overseenightly duty and coverage of the living areas by student staff and others.

Keepthe Residence Life leadership team apprised of current and/or potentialproblems involving residents, parents, guests, etc.

Attendand actively participate in weekly individual and Residence Life staff teammeetings.

Assistin the supervision of the residential component of university summer camps,conferences, recreation, and summer resident housing, including allrecruitment, selection, and hiring of summer personnel and budgeting forprograms and services.

Assistin leading staff and student teams in the successful implementation of acomprehensive camp and conference program, from prior planning to postevaluation including providing outside customer service, a safe facility,trained staff, and accurate administrative records.

Assistas daily contact person to assigned camp and conferences groups, provideuniversity response for emergencies during camps and conferences, and ensurethe completion of all maintenance work orders and damage charges to groups atthe conclusion of each summer camp.

StaffSelection, Training, and Supervision:

Providedirection to the student staff in communicating, interpreting, andadministering Residence Life and University policies and procedures.

Provideopportunities, training experiences, and one-to-one contacts that identify andhelp resolve individual problems and conflicts.

Recruit,select, train, supervise, and courage Resident Assistant (RA) and AssistantResidence Director (ARD) staff.

Conductweekly staff meetings to disseminate information, provide training experiences,foster personal and professional growth, and develop a sense of team cohesionand vision.

Provideguidance, support, and information needed for Ras to fulfill theirresponsibilities in a timely manner, meeting one-on-one, maintaining regularcontact, and open communication with each RA.

Createand facilitate ongoing student, professional, and leadership staff developmentopportunities.

Revieweach RA's progress toward goals; provide support, guidance, and redefinition ofthose goals.

CommunityDevelopment:

Modela Christian lifestyle and professional standards to staff and residents.

Encourageawareness of student organizations across campus, development of studentleaders, and participation in campus traditions.

Demonstratea strong commitment to establishing relationships with residents, studentleaders, and other staff, maintaining a level of visibility with each group;develop and implement strategies for intentional interaction with every studentin assigned living area each semester.

StudentCare and Conduct:

Proactivelyinteract with students to help in their success at HSU and collaborate toassist in contacting students for follow-up in areas such as early alerts,registration, housing reapplication, and other efforts as needed.

Serveas a primary personal resource for staff and students in dealing with specificresidence hall concerns, including roommate conflicts, interpersonal conflicts,and other developmental issues.

Providecare and support for residents in areas of concern, including, but not limitedto, medical, relational, familial, financial, and vocational challenges.

Communicateand employ Residence Life policies, procedures, and emergency protocol.

Appropriatelyconfront students who are violating community standards.

Encouragestudents to demonstrate responsible and ethical behavior in their communities.

Serveas a conduct officer; adjudicate and manage all low-level violations of theStudent Handbook in assigned living areas.

ResidentialCurriculum & Learning Outcomes:

Learnand actively teach the five Residence Life Learning Outcomes.

Assistparaprofessional staff in the planning and implementation of a comprehensiveresidential curriculum, including floor, all hall, and department programming.

Identifythe needs of the area, establish goals for communities, and design effectiveintentional interactions and programming.

Directand coordinate activities to develop an environment where resident needs areeffectively addressed.

Promotedepartmental goals and priorities to campus partners, ensure an accurateaccount of all programmatic effects in living area on a weekly basis, andassist to curate the Residence Life story. (Weekly, monthly, semester, andannual reports.)

Assistwith assessment efforts for the department, identify and implement programmaticgrowth plans based on assessment, and maintain assessment records.

Workwith area staff to develop an environment conducive to students' learning.

Otherlive-in assigned campus apartment to supervise a community of students andfulfill the responsibilities of the position.

Demonstratesupport for the philosophy of the HSU Student Life Division, Residence Life,and the HSU guidelines in the University Personnel & Safety Handbooks anddepartmental policies.

Complywith all policies including outside agencies and regulations, including but notlimited to: Title IX, Department of Education, Clery Act, FERPA, EEOC, theDepartment of Labor and the Department of Justice.

Serveon appropriate student development committees as needed.

Pursuecontinuing education and knowledge of current trends in Student Affairs.

Attend,and when opportunities arise, present for professional organizations,conferences, and workshops for professional development as approved bysupervisor.

Completespecial projects and all other duties as requested.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directlysupervises multiple student workers, including Resident Assistants andAssistant Resident Directors. Carries out supervisory responsibilities inaccordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training student employees;planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding anddisciplining student employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules,operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to writeroutine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groupsof customers or employees of an organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add andsubtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide by 10's and 100's.Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weightmeasurement, volume, and distance.

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully,an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheetsoftware; Project Management software; Payroll systems; Order processingsystems; Internet software and Human Resource systems.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution isrequired.

Master's degree in higher education administration, studentdevelopment, counseling, human services, or a related field preferred.

Two or more years of full-time experience in Residence Lifeor Student Affairs preferred.

Two or more years' experience supervising, mentoring, andmotivating a diverse student staff team preferred.

Two or more years' experience in coordinating paraprofessionalstaff training and development for students preferred.

Experience engaging student crisis and at-risk student needspreferred.

Demonstrated collaborative work with faculty to create aseamless environment that encompasses students' academic and co-curricularexperiences preferred.

Demonstrated involvement in professional associations in thefield of Higher Education Student Affairs preferred.

Proficiency with data management and housing/conductsoftware packages preferred.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability torelate effectively with students and communicate professionally is required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This is a Non-Exempt, Full-Time Staff Position. Aminimum of a 40-hour work week is expected; weekly schedule may varyeach week. Candidate must be able to work non-traditional hours, includingnights and weekends depending on the time of year.

Work beyond a normal 40-hour week is occasionally requiredas needed for on-call, etc.

All hours worked beyond 40 hours in a single workweek will be compensated at time and a half, per FLSA guidelines.

Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver'sLicense and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under theuniversity liability policy.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments onand off campus, as needed.

Some travel may be required on occasion in order to attendoff-campus events and/or training when necessary.
