U.S. Border Patrol is currently hiring for full-time, entry-level Law Enforcement Officer positions, with openings available immediately.

Salary and Benefits

The annual base salary for newly appointed Law Enforcement Officers varies by grade level, with the following ranges:

GL-5/GL-7: $49,739 - $89,518 per year. Pay rates may vary based on duty location, and a fully trained officer could be eligible for an additional 25% of base pay due to the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with progression through GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12 levels. You will be eligible for promotion to the next higher grade upon successfully completing 52 weeks in each grade.

Border Patrol Agents are eligible for an array of federal benefits, including health, dental, and other insurance plans, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k).

*Recruitment Incentive* Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents may receive up to a $20,000 incentive. The first $10,000 is awarded upon completing the Border Patrol Academy, with the remaining $10,000 granted for accepting a prioritized location.

*Retention Incentive* Newly appointed agents may also qualify for up to $40,000 in additional incentives distributed over the first four years.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Law Enforcement Officer, you will play a vital role in safeguarding the American public by protecting borders, deterring illicit activities, and enhancing economic prosperity. Your responsibilities will typically include:

• Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws while inspecting documents and possessions.
• Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers at or near the borders through surveillance, including using infrared scopes during night operations.
• Interpreting and following physical evidence of illegal entry.
• Performing checks on farms, buildings, vehicles, and conducting city patrols.
• Patrolling various terrains using government assets such as vehicles, horses, and ATVs.

Qualifications

GL-5 Grade Level Qualifications:

Experience: One year of general work experience demonstrating the ability to take charge and make sound decisions in stressful situations. Understanding regulations and methods through training and the ability to gather information through observation is required.

Education Substitution: A bachelor's degree or equivalent four-year college education in any field from an accredited institution.

Combination of Experience and Education: Consideration will be given to a mix of experience and completed education.

GL-7 Grade Level Qualifications:

Experience: One year of specialized work experience demonstrating skills in judgment, decision-making in firearms use, and effective interactions in law enforcement contexts.

Experience must include making arrests and analyzing information to make prompt decisions in law enforcement situations.

Education Substitution: A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement or one year of graduate-level education in a related field from an accredited institution.

Combination of Experience and Education: This will also be considered based on submitted documentation.

Other Requirements

Citizenship: Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.

Residency: Must have primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.

Age Restriction: Candidates must be referred for selection before their 40th birthday, with exceptions for eligible veterans and prior federal law enforcement service members.

Formal Training: Upon being hired, you will attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of extensive training in laws, operations, and physical techniques required for Border Patrol Agents. Fluency in Spanish and English is required, and training will enhance your skills in both languages.
