The Opportunity:

The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications seeks multiple candidates for the position of Instructional Designer II to work in the CJC Distance Education Department.

The Instructional Designer II partners with faculty, subject matter experts, and team members to plan, design, and develop high-quality learning experiences that meet or exceed Quality Matters standards for post-secondary learners. This role applies instructional design principles, adult learning theories, learning science, and accessibility standards to produce courses and instructional materials that promote student success in online or hybrid modalities. The Instructional Designer II also supports faculty adoption of effective instructional practices, best practices in online education and learning management, and digital tools through consultation, training, and ongoing collaboration.

Quality Matters (QM) certification and familiarity with QM standards are essential for this role. Our online programs rely on the QM framework to ensure academic rigor, course alignment, accessibility, and learner success. The Instructional Designer II must be able to apply QM principles within course development, faculty guidance, and continuous improvement processes. Ongoing professional development in QM is expected after hire to maintain currency with evolving standards and to support the sustained quality and integrity of our online offerings.

Duties of this position include:

• Uses industry-leading authoring tools to develop and maintain course templates, related course syllabi, and communications. Tools include, but are not limited to, Canvas with CidiLabs/Design Tools, Camtasia, Articulate Rise & Storyline, Play Posit, Harmonize, Adobe Suite, MS Office, and Zoom.
• Provides project management for multiple learning projects and course developments simultaneously from concept to completion, including conducting needs assessments, creating curriculum, and developing interactive content, videos, and audio assets. Develops course scope, timelines, deliverables, and materials. Tracks project status in Monday.com and maintains course development files in the UF-provided Google Drive.
• Provides strategic guidance to subject matter experts on instructional design principles and adult learning theory, shaping courses from concept to evaluation, including scope, timelines, materials, and assessment strategies.
• Guides faculty through the course development process using industry best practices and Quality Matters (QM) standards to ensure alignment, accessibility, and learner engagement.
• Ensures all courses adhere to UF policies and procedures, as well as federal accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.1, ADA, Section 508), and avoids copyright infringement across all instructional materials and multimedia content.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of learning materials and courses, including providing analytical support and conducting quality assurance reviews.
• Collaborates with team members to ensure video lectures meet best-in-class standards; video editing skills are essential.
• Facilitates and/or presents webinars and tool trainings for faculty, instructors, and team members, as needed.

This is a full-time, remote position. The Instructional Designer II must be available during core collaboration hours between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, Eastern Time. Some flexibility in work schedule is required to meet faculty course development needs and project deadlines.

Expected Salary:

$62,500.00

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of appropriate experience.

Preferred:

• Six (6) years of work in instructional design and online curriculum development (minimum 4 years preferred).
• Master's degree in education, Learning Technologies, Curriculum Development, or Instructional Design.
• Demonstrated proficiency in instructional‑design models, adult‑learning theory, and universal‑design principles.
• Experience with Canvas (or a comparable Learning Management System).
• Experience in post‑secondary teaching and curriculum development.
• Strong organizational skills and track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
• High attention to detail and proven project‑management abilities.
• Professional certifications in Camtasia, Canvas, and Articulate 360.
• Highly experienced with Quality Matters, holding up‑to‑date certifications (APPQMR, PRC, etc.) or willingness to complete Quality Matters courses upon hire.
• Track record of supporting faculty in a post‑secondary environment.
